There were some articles in local papers about the recent spread of Steriods in Korea... I'll see if I can find them.

Found this in the digital chosun. Doesn't really answer the question but kind of does (see the bold):

The Dangers of Quick-Fix Body Building

More and more ordinary people wrestle with the temptation to take steroids to pump up their muscles fast. Some TV stars take them, and even teenagers swallow them without much thought. Belatedly, the Korea Food and Drug Administration is to classify anabolic steroids, which are similar to male sex hormones, in a special restricted category.
Anabolic steroids basically accelerate protein synthesis, increasing muscle mass and strengthening the muscles in a short time. Many athletes and bodybuilders take them to get short-term results, most famously perhaps Ben Johnson, the runner who was deprived of his gold medal in the Seoul Olympics in 1988 for taking the drugs. Anabolic steroids also speed up the process of generating energy in the body and allow it to generate explosive power.

They also stimulate the bone marrow cells and enable them to generate a lot of blood cells and thus increase oxygen consumption. But if taken for more than 12 weeks, they can cause dangerous side effects.
Dr. Kim Dong-hyun at the Doping Control Center of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology says they can cause heart attack, stroke, decline of liver function, a diabetics' impaired glucose tolerance, a decline of testicular function, insomnia and emotional instability, when constantly used. Especially for teenagers, body development may be retarded. A girl may end up with a husky voice and smaller breast. And there are many athletes who died young among steroid takers."

The next best way for bodybuilders is protein supplements, which have no severe side effects ? unless they include steroids, as some brands do. Protein supplements help to build muscles, but of course they may lead to problems if taken in excess.

Prof. Ryu Byung-ok of Soonchunhyang University Hospital says, "If protein is taken excessively, it is transformed to fat, thus it can make people gain weight and also cause side effects such as acidification of blood, arthritis, dehydration or osteoporosis. Except for athletes who exercise continuously, it isnt easy to build muscles only by taking protein supplements."

Stupid generalisations; which steroid?! There are dozens of different ones....

No, they're not legal. Are they common? Hell, in my gym here in tiny Yeosu there are 10 guys juicing. They've repeatedly asked me if I would care to join them. They keep their vials of dromastanolone in the glass-front refrigerator in the gym and occasionally inject during business hours. They don't hide it at all, and it amuses me.

I'll make the joke before someone else does. It's probably from all the . . . kimchi! There, I said it.

Before I came over here, I thought that a lot of Koreans would be a little short and scrawny. The men seem a lot taller and a lot bigger (muscle-wise) than I thought.

Sorry I know this thread is a bit old. I haven't noticed any influx of huge dudes at the gyms I frequent. There is the odd one or two guys that I think have dosed, or are dosing. Certainly one of the gyms owner has.

I can understand why they would though. I imagine most Koreans are hard gainers. I know I am. I work much harder than most of them and I haven't put on any weight in more than a year, even though I have a strict BB diet.

I haven't heard any talk of it either.

m.. .

Wow, I think this may be one of the first posts I have made even though I have been visiting on and off since '98

I'm still curious as to the legalities of it here.

From what I understand, the US and Canada are fairly far apart on how they view Crank (and associated drugs).

Would it be a slap on the wrist here, jail time, or nothing at all?

((not that I'm interested. That was one of the things my wife was adamant about when we got married - no more crank))

Is that really slang for steroids? Could be mighty confusing seeing as it also means amphetamines.

Anything you want to ask... I'll answer in all honesty.

Not really sure what people are interested in.

And yeah, 'crank' was the term we used. 'Juice' and 'sauce' were also acceptable though Wink

I imagine for a Korean it wouldn't mean much at all. They would likely have it taken away from them and have the crap scared out of them. As for one of us, likely deportation.

I'm interested in details about the effects- how exactly did it effect your performance and growth?
Did you experience any negative side effects? Any (unexpected) positive effects?
What did it cost?
What made you decide to take them? Did you compete in a sport or were the results an end in themselves?
What's it like now not using them? Is it depressing that you can't make gains like you used to?

Thanks in advance for satisfying my curiosity...
