I've been in Korea for 6 years and have spent the last 5 years teaching in universities. At the end of my second year in my first uni job, I decided to move because I didn't want to live in the small city which wasn't really near Seoul. I got a better job at a university in Seoul (very close anyway) and am in the third year of my contract here.

Well yesterday I was informed that my contract could not be extended due to university policy (eventhough it was hoped, and I was told, that staying for a 4th year was perhaps possible a while back). Thus, I experienced a range of emotions the other night. This was the first job I have had where I would have been content to stay for my entire teaching career.

That obviously makes me feel quite disappointed, to be let go for whatever reason(s) the three year rule is in effect for. And I realized this about the entire situation which is sad as well. In the first year you are new and you want to make the place feel like home to you... it's an adjustment year. During year two, you're comfortable. But that comfort only lasts one year, because you've got to begin to prepare for the job search the year after. So of the 3 years, only one of them is truly a comfortable one where you don't have to worry about your situation to any great degree.

Anyway... just some thoughts I thought I'd share. Lastly, if anybody is in the same boat, my university hasn't started looking for a replacement yet, but I'd put in a good word for anyone in my same situation and get you an interview and make you pretty much a lock for the position, if you'd do the same for me (and I mean a 2.5 a month uni job to start). PM me if interested in helping do a job swap.

yeah that happened to me a few years ago. It really sucks. I heard the 3 year rule is actually that after 3 years the university has to give you bonuses and is obligated to give you extra things.

anyway My university isn't renewing my contract but they are giving me a wonderful letter of reccomendation. They are advertised on Dave's but if your school is near where I live Yongin give me a shout.
