Hi all,
Does anyone have a list of dental costs in Korea or know approximate costs?
Thanks |

fillings and root canals are covered by insurance, neither should cost more than 20,000W. A cleaning might run you around 60,000W but mine was thrown in free, when I got a crown, and a couple of fillings ( and had referred a few friends) |

Thanks, thats pretty good.
I have a feeling i may need some work doing. I am going for check up in January (the earliest appointment i could get here in England, the NHS system is screwed over here) and a root canal or filling is 5 times that amount. I might be in Korea by January/February so I might consider waiting. |

Actually the quote of 20,000 for a root canal or a filling is not correct.
For a root canal, TECHNICALLY it is covered by your insurance, but you have to go several times and there is a min. fee you pay each time you go in - 10-20,000. So, I was told that a root canal may take 3-5 visits to complete. I forget if these 3-5 visits included the CAP you HAVE to get put on which is NOT covered by insurance. The cap will run you 200-300 (I can't remember). So in reality, the root canal is NOT "no more than 20,000".
I was told I needed 3 root canals and he quoted me at 1.5 million. Far from the 60,000 quoted here.
Also, for fillings its the same thing. A certain type is covered but if you want silver, or porcelin (sp?) than it is more expensive.
I think a realistic quote is more like 400 for a root canal and 100 for a filling. |

No, that can't be right. Years ago I got a root canal and GOLD crown without insurance for 300,000 won
Oh, and I might add...the root canal is without anesthesia. It doesn't hurt at first but ten minutes later, you feel like lightning struck that tooth. |

If you ever need major dental work and feel like traveling, I know some great dentists in Northern Mexico (the clinic is across the street from the U.S. border) that have a great clinic that doesn't cost much and does a better job than any dentist that I've been to in America.
My grandparents had major work done and they loved the job that they did. Half of the people there speak English, so there's always someone there that can translate if you don't speak Spanish. |

I had a root canal for about 450,000 won, without insurance. Apparently, insurance doesn't cover the cost of the crown. As far as fillings go, it depends on the filling. A resin filling (the white stuff) is not covered by insurance, whilst amalgam filling is. Most dentists don't like to use amalgam anymore.
My dentist told me that, in the past, there were concerns about cancer. However, research has never found a link between the two. The current concern about amalgam is that the stuff is not environmentally friendly and so is difficult to dispose of.
Regardless, its cheaper here than back home. |

Does all normal health insurance cover dental as well? At my hagwon they were telling me that dental wasn't part of it. And I also have a funny feeling I'll need to get some work done.
Also, any suggestions on a good place to go that speaks English? |

By anesthesia are you referring to those shots you get that numb your mouth? If so, I don't know why you didn't get them. I had a root canal done here, and had my mouth frozen for it without a problem at all. |

I'm in the process of having root canal work done (not literally right now, obviously - I mean that I had some done yesterday and I'm having more done next week), and my dentist excitedly told me that next time she can do it without anaesthetic. I asked her to clarify.
"No injection!" she told me.
"Not a chance in the pit of Hades." I told her. |

Once the nerve has been removed, you don't need any injections. You won't feel anything.
I go to Dr Kim's Dental Clinic
Soon Joo Kim, DDS, PhD
889-5 Daechi-dong, Gangnam-gu
Champs-Elysees Center A-3F
Tel: 02-563 9860
Dr Kim speaks English and studied his PhD in the United States.
Take Exit 1 at Seonreung Station. The building is immediately outside the exit. His receptionist speaks some English, but she will get Dr Kim on the phone. He is closed on Thursdays but open on Saturday.
I found out about Dr Kim when someone else on this board recommended him. |

Um... well this is kinda about dental costs so here seems like a good place to ask. Any one know if you can get nitrous oxide when you get dental work done here? Or is that a No-No here? Just wondering. Any info would be nice.
Thanks |

Dr. Kim is awesome. I second him. I've been seeing him for orthodontics. Braces come off next month! |

Did you then have to pay for a crown or inlay? |
