. . . is it as bad as I keep hearing? How does your typical Korean pilsner compare to, say, a Pabst here in the States? Pabst = good. BudLite = bad.

How available and how expensive are your imports (Guinness/Newcastle/Heiniken) in bars and/or in the markets?

I keep hearing beer in Korea sucks and this is a concern.

In a word, yes. Korean beer sucks. However it is much cheaper than Australia. However I recently travelled to the States, and I guess it is about the same price as beer there. You can buy it everywhere. However Korean brands don't seem to make distinct 'styles' of beer. Or atleast they don't label them as such. There are some differences in tastes though.

There is one called Cass 'Red' which is almost double strength, though when I drink that I get a rash over my neck and face...

Hope that gives you some insight. Oh, and imported beers are usually about twice the price of Korean beers.

Yeah my roommate used to drink Pabst. I guess it's cheap, I always thought it tasted like shit. He used to line the cans up on our desks in our dorm room and call it the "Hall of Justice" or some shit from comics.

Don't get me wrong, he liked other beers....just loved the cheap stuff so he could blow more money on DnD. At least he had some priorities right there.

Its pretty bad.

I would say that Hite is probably the most bearable, although that really isn't saying much. IMO Cass and Cass Red are two of the worst beers I have ever tasted, not to mention the hangover that will surely follow. Hite Stout isn't too bad though, although it isn't really a stout, more like a dark lager.

As for the price of foreign imports, you are generally looking at about double the Korean beers. That being said, it will depend on where you are thinking of living. Where i live you can get a Hoegarden (sp?) or a Becks in a bar for 5,000w a bottle, which isn't too bad.

Yes, Korean beer is shyte. I'd agree that Hite is the most bearable, but it is still crap. In the bars you will pay around 6,000 for any foreign beer. As far as markets, well, here are some prices:

Corona - 2900
Duvel - 4600
Moosehead - 2500
Heineken - 2900
Dark Heineken - 3600
Tsing Tao - 2600

You get the idea. I've no idea how much Guiness is because I never buy the stuff --- too expensive.

For flavor, which is trace, Prime Max is great. For light, no taste: Cass Ice Light. For getting the shits and relieving constipation: Exfeel (with fiber added to make you pass carbs more quicly, no joke). For the best beer brewed in Korea: Platinum microbrewery, Gangnam station, exit 8 (but no take out growlers).


Is there any microbrewery in Seoul that has take-out growlers?

a can of guinness goes for 3500 won a can at my GS 25.

not bad....

japanese beer is a slight bit better than korean and is usually somewhat reasonably priced. asahi is maybe 3300 won for a tallboy (convenience store prices, cheaper elsewhere i'm sure)

also, i've been going to e-mart and getting OETTINGER - german beer (no added rice!) for 1700 won or so per can. not the best beer, but 10 x better than the korean stuff and positively cheap considering it's imported.

oh yeah i bought newcastle before at star super. man. 5000 won a bottle. gee, 30,000 won for a sixpack. what a deal!!!

i miss getting drunk off that beer.
