I think a Russia - Israel draw would put England in assuming they beat Croatia. Unlikely I would say.

McLaren guess will be sacked when they don't qualify.

A story in Guardian today with S MacLaren blaming the ref---apparently the Rooney tackle was out of the box. Anyway Hiddink said McLaren should look at himself for the loss.

Isn't Hiddink something else? ROK Aussie and now Russia---Jesus it looks like he could take anyone through the World Cup...

Which further ridicules the FA with regards to their decision to choose the likes of McClaren over Hiddink in the first place. If ever there was an incompetent body...it's the FA.

Steve McClaren is a Nib!

He was the cheapest alternative after the FA blew all the milk money on Svennis. A bit like Sammy Lee at Bolton, take the right hand man and watch him sink, in no time.

I don't think there's a lack of options just that the main players control the team. After shitbags Robinson, Terry, Ferdinand, Cole, Lampard, Gerrard, Rooney, Owen. You've got three places up for grabs, I don't understand how many games it's gonna take for them to realise they don't work. How any failed competitions. I doubt McClaren has any input into the team selection, it basically goes on who's got the fittest WAG. Hounds all of them!

This is why I'm shouting for scotland now. Any country who's main films have been about smack gets my vote. Teamwork!

yeah but what are you gonna do? Play Peter Crouch? Defoe?

Heskey played quite well when he was allowed out. it's like people only want the big name strikers out there, but when they get out there they suck balls.

i'm a massively huge Gerrard fan, but why hasn't Stevie G been performing lately? (i'm going to hell for that statement, i just know it.)

And I havent even mentioned the goalkeeper yet. Useless fat *beep*.

and Paul Robinson should be kicked off the team. put david james in and let ben foster sub.

at the end of the day heskey isnt a serious option, he is a target man more suited to the premiership, the poor man's didier drogba. He has only had one season where he had a decent scoring record. I remember when he was young playing for Leicester and he had to be subbed because Abel Xavier was calling him names and he got upset. Nothing has really changed he is still a confidence player with so little confidence he plays for fucking wigan

as for Gerrard, if he has played well for england since the 5-1 win in munich I cant remember it.

I used to watch Heskey a lot when I was at Uni in Leicester. He serves his purpose as a well oiled battering ram. He was a player in form before he got injured, that's why he played well for those two games for England. Since the last day of the season when he played like he should do, Wigan stayed up.

Crouch isn't playing for Liverpool now so can't be considered a serious option. Beckham's not there to pop it on his head. Defoe isn't playing for spurs. Owen hasn't been good since he started believeing his own hype about 5 years ago.

Gerrard, I would agree was a player that I thought wouldn't believe his own hype. He's resisted for a while. Lampard's play fell 2 years ago and he's just playing for the money now. This is happening to Gerrard now. A few years of running the team affects players, makes them disappear up their own asses. Terry Henry is a good example.

People have always commented on how the FA is full of cronies, who are way too self important to think of the good of the team. They'll carry on picking the ego players even when they're of no use. England not qualifying may be a wakeup call to them, but I doubt it.

Steve McClaren has insisted that he is improving as England boss and is confident he will keep his job.

The under-fire Three Lions chief appears in real danger of losing his job, as England sit on the brink of failing to qualify for the finals of Euro 2008.

But McClaren feels he is growing into the role and hopes the Football Association keep faith with him in the same way as they did with Bobby Robson in 1984 when he failed to qualify for the European Championships in France.

After his failure Robson guided England to a World Cup quarter-final and semi-final and McClaren is hopeful he will get the chance to continue.

Hope

"I believe I will survive," he said.

"I have come through adversity in the past and I am sure I will again.

"We are in a period of uncertainty. But the uncertainty is about this qualifying campaign, not my job.

"The first six to eight months were very difficult, the last seven we've made great progress and the performances have been very good, and everyone's seen the progress made.

"Look at the last six months - the squad and the team have come together playing in a good style."

Upbeat

McClaren remains upbeat ahead of Saturday's make-or-break games for Russia and Croatia.

England need Israel to stop Russia winning, or for Macedonia to beat Croatia in Skopje and McClaren is hopeful Wednesday's final Euro 2008 clash with the Croats will still have some meaning.

"Hopefully the result will go right for us on Saturday night (between Israel and Russia) and we will be able to qualify when we play Croatia," he said.

"I'm positive. I still believe that the Croatia game will be the game.

"There's still a long way to go. The pressure is on Russia and Israel to perform."

Steve! Please go. We're not going to qualify, you did a bad job.

I think this is a cross between Gloria Gaynor's hit song and R Kelly's LSD related song.

I posted that half asleep this morning, sorry, and have had a quick read again and noticed a few things.

Is there not a link between the fact that we goofed up what really wasn't that difficult a group to qualify from? And isn't that fact linked completly with the fact that this guy picks the team and tells them what to do? There is a certainty here that and that is he messed up, with his team of prime madonnas.

Immaterial if we don't qualify. These guys are professionals surely. Why do they need any incentive to play well. I know they're not the most intelligent people but still.

HOPE HOPE HOPE. BELIEVE BELIEVE. Let's hope old stevie's got some Karma locked away.

I'll be gutted for one reason with the Euro Champs and that's if Scotland don't qualify.

Never mind, you can cheer on Scotland once we do the business against Italy tomorrow!!! Laughing

And I don't agree with the excuse about the pitch in Moscow, Celtic played Spartak Moscow there in a CL qualifier and we managed to get a draw from it. And we are really, really bad away from home in European games.

I hope so. England would have got thumped in that group!!!!

England seemed to be unlucky in the Russia match. Some very good chances to win it not taken. England played well but it wasn't to be. Still hope it'll be some kind of wake up call if we don't make it. Jumped up, over paid shirleys. Probably won't even register on them.

I agree with you. It's been said often enough about England recently, the players get paid far too much money and there doesn't seem to be any passion at all when it comes to playing for the national team.
