Hi,
The only decent photos I get with our P&S is sunset pictures and nightime ones.
I am not sure how much I would use it, although I do have a keen eye for a good shot.
Could I get something functional (maybe not pretty) to get my feet wet?
I cannot justify spending megabuckson something which may be put to good use.
I have seen adverts at subway stations for a company which will hire you almost anything. Do you know if they do DSLRs too?
Thanks,
Ken |

What's your budget? The Nikon D40X came out recently. That is my new standard rec for new DSLR owners who aren't sure what they're getting into. |

NEW Nikon D40 kits are sliding in under 400k now-a-days....
What is megabucks that you don;t want to spend? |

Anything over 400 would be getting into megabucks.
I may have to wait till springtime before buying.
I did manage to get the shutter speed faster on our Nikkon S5, so it takes better indoor pictures without having to flash.
I can try and tamper with the flash strength (if there is such a thing?), to make low light pictures better to take. It tends to make the subject whiter than white, with the surroundings being dark.
I think changing the shutter speed would have helped. |

D40 with kit lens is 430,000 won ... gray market. that's a damn good price. the D40x is more expensive, but it's got a lot of upgraded features from the better cameras, especially the sensor. however, it's still shackled to 2.5 fps.
i think the D40 is the best entry level camera available. and like all beginners, it does have a full 'auto' option which will help you out while you're learning your way around the camera.
you said you have a nikon film camera, and the only disadvantage to the entry level nikon D40 is that it doesn't have the manual pin focus winder that you find in older cameras. it relies on electronic sensors for winding. you can use old lenses, but you have to focus them manually ... adding to the time it takes to produce a shot.
i've written a good guide to buying cameras in korea ... my signature has the link!
btw, we have a photography club here: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=19270545664
you should join up. we're doing a nude shoot tomorrow at 4pm and have other regular get togethers most weekends |

Hey Dave,
Thanks for the great advice, and it's an automatic camera I have but the settings are way too OTT to get decent low light pictures.
I will take a more detailed look at your guide, while looking for bargains too.
I am Scottish, but even for me the nude shoot sounds way too chilly for my liking
And the missus would get jealous of opther people seeing my chilly willy. |

you're welcome!
um ... i'm going to assume you're kidding, but by nude shoot, i meant we were hiring a nude model to photograph in a studio.
since that was yesterday, you've missed out! however, we had a great day. i might be nice and post a few pictures.
you should still join the photo club, if you haven't already, and get in on future weekend get togethers or group studio work!
cheers
