Attacks Spark Debate About Chinese Anti-Koreanism

A series of attacks on Koreans in the Chinese city of Shenyang over the past couple of months has sparked a dispute about anti-Korean sentiment among Chinese netizens.
One Chinese Internet user posted comments on the attacks under the title, Chinese start teaching Koreans a lesson on Chinas largest web portal Sina.com, drawing more than 8,000 readers and over 70 replies as of Wednesday afternoon.

The end of the posting is adorned with a propaganda slogan reading, Lets drive Koreans out of China. Supporting the claim, some Chinese users expressed anti-Korean sentiment in replies, proposing a boycott of Korean products or expelling Koreans and teach a lesson to people who look down on the Chinese.

But many others voiced concern that the sudden anti-Korean sentiment could hurt ties between Korea and China, calling it chauvinism. Some replies criticized the writer of the post for narrow-minded nationalism disguised in patriotism. Koreans are good people, one reply read. Youll like them if you have any sense. Others said the sudden anti-Korean sentiment arose because the attacker has yet to be arrested.

An official of a Korean association in Shenyang said the attacks have frightened Koreans there. I hope the attacker will be arrested as soon as possible and the unnecessary dispute about anti-Korean sentiment will end soon, he said.

Who else thinks this started with a flame war on the internet. Koreans often grin and bear it in person, but they're very brave behind a keyboard.

I guess many Dave's posters are not that much different.

Be careful. You might rise the scorn of everybody's favourite senior citizen.

Wow, in a nation of 1.5 billion, 8000 people read a post about attacking Koreans, with a whole 70 even replying! Oh no, it's an epidemic of Korea-hating!

We had a quiz at the uni the other day. We asked what the most popular kind of kimchi is made from (the vegetable - the answer being Chinese cabbage. This led to proclamations of - teacher, you're wrong - Chinese cabbage not good! Only some restaurants use it! They couldn't believe that the actual name of the cabbage is Chinese cabbage.

I've noticed on youtube there's a huge flame war between Koreans, Chinese, Japanese, and Thais. All conducted in really bad english. Each accusing each other of various crimes, congenital defects, etc. It's pretty funny. Yeah, those poor Koreans being picked on in China. Boo hoo.

And of course their hair too, apparently. Had a Korean friend badmouthing this about Chinese people, how you could always tell them from other Asians because their hair is so "greasy".

I had a Chinese girlfriend at the time, so it didn't go over too well. And just to piss off the Korean girl saying this, I said "Really? We can't tell any of you apart. Maybe your hair is greasy too." Not nice, I know, but this Chinese girl was not only beautiful but much nicer than almost any Korean girl I have ever met.

Sorry but the Korean superiority crap gets to me. No wonder it might actually get annoying to other Asian people as well.

I'm still waiting for you to go give a piece of your mind to a Nigerian regarding your true feelings about them.

Honestly... I'm glad the chinese dudes busted up some of these star-crafte wittle mama's boys. About time some sorted out the Korean's and their swinish little attitude of superiority.

Problem is korea tries to inflict the whole tribal hyper-nationalist competition on westerners, who really don't think like that anymore and have only been a friend to this country for the past 60 years.

yes, well, koreans wouldn't know anything about this would they.

it's hight time to teach those sectarian chinese the high-minded 'korea loves and embraces the world' spirit.
