Ok sorry, I thought I remembered from another post that you hadn't seen much of Thailand.. sounds like you've seen more than me though..
I haven't done the island thing. Have fun in the Big Mango..

Well, actually you are more or less right. I spent one month there in November/December of 1996. That was the first and only time. Basically I got to more or less skim the country without spending any serious time in any one place unfortunately.

This time around, no plans for any long bus trips or anything else.. just bum around Bangkok.. but if you know anything thats maximum of about 3 at the most away from BKK I might be interested in that.

I also totally missed Pattaya the first time around.. but this time thinking of perhaps spending a couple days there as well.. I heard its pretty sleezy and everything else.. but that'll probably be what makes it a place I have to see as well.. don't know how I missed that the first time around either..

No, thats another place I need to check out.. thankfully fairly close to BKK which would be a good excursion. How much time should I set aside to see it?

I definitely suggest a couple of days in Ayuthaya. Its only an hour and a half by train and it costs like 15 baht. You can rent a bicycle and see the ruins as the city is fairly compact or we paid a tuk-tuk driver 500 baht to take us around all day

we are also thinking of spending February down there but we will cash in our FF miles for that if you are on United FF program its only 20,000 miles if you fly United to BKK 40,000 if you use a Star Alliance carrier so airfares are not a problem for us

We keep going back to Lamai as we have found a nice mid range place and the beach is nice etc but not too boring but this time we may jaunt over to Phi Phi or Ko Chang now that you can fly to Ko Chang

I planned to go there last time but ran out of time. Hopefully I'll have time in January. I think Rudyflyer answered your question anyway.

Ko Chang..

Where exactly is that? and how far from BKK? I've been reading a webblog from someone who has been spending extraordinary amounts of time there over the last year.

I think it's closer to the Cambodian border. I stayed on Ko Samet and I think I remember there being some way to travel between the boat but it was some distance. I may have my details a little off though.

Ko Chang's out then.

Probably Bangkok (bum around Silim, Siam, Nana and Chinatown).. a few excursions probably to Pattaya and Ayuthaya.. should be pretty cool..

For the most part, I just plan to get to bum and drink in as many different bars and clubs as possible. I'm all templed out and touristed out.. looking moreso for ripping it up in one of the world's largest nightlife centers in the world.

Speaking of which.. are they still enforcing that 2am curfew that I've been reading about? and where do people go after 2am? I've heard they drink on the street? If so, where and what streets or areas? (Just heard something about that more or less)..

P.S. Zed.. when is your contract up? 2 months from now? or 1 month?

9 days in Bangkok is a long time, I lived in Phuket for a couple of years and would head up to Bangkok for few days every now and then but when I once got stuck waiting for a flight to HK for 10 days I was pretty bored. It's stinking hot without breezes and although nightlife is good most places are adhering to the 2am curfew, especially since APEC was coming. You can find places but I spoke to a friend who is still there and he says they have been cracking down on a few of the all night places we used to frequent. If partying is your thing though do Sukhumvit, patpong is largely overated.

How late is Nana Plaza open? Anything open around Sukhumvit and that area after 2am?

I was last on Sukhumvit (Nana is Sukhumvit 4) at the end of August and they were being pretty strict. Theer had recently been problems with a sukhumvit strip of bars and also a lot of the action was missing from Nana. You could probably find something if you ask a tuk tuk driver but they will often take you to a hostess bar where they get a commission. Speaking for Phuket, in Patong the 7-11 would get big crowds after 2am. It's fine for people to sell beer from coolers and you can still buy it at the stores and drinking on the street is no problem. Bangkok is obviously a lot biger so maybe on Khao San Rd. people hang and drink on the streets. I never cared much for that street though.

Yeah, Ko Sahn Road is the one place I want to avoid.. that is the only place I got to know well on my one and only 1996 excursion.. and it left me with a bad taste in my mouth for Bangkok and Thailand (kept running into the same people from that place as we were on the same buses being sold from the tourist offices).

So, BKK will be shutting down around 2am? I'll find something.. I can't sleep at that time.. I don't really want to go to a hostess bar either though.

What I really want is to be in social situations interacting with alot of people (not some one-on-one hostess bar).. or anything of the like where some girl is trying to get me to go home right here and right now.

Ko Sahn Road is a little too extreme on the social side though.. no real interest to network with backpackers as I'm not backpacking this time around.. kind of looking for a mix of alot of socializing but having a big mix of all different kinds of either local Thai or the foreigners that live there and all the rest.

Well maybe I'll start with BKK.. move on Pattaya.. and where would be a somewhat nearby place with ALOT of nightlife going on all night long? That could be my last resort place? (Phuket?)

Try staying on or off Sukhumvit, if you don't need to be near the temples that is a pretty happening area. I stayed in a Lonely Planet reccommended place - golden Palce Hotel I think - twice and it is older but clean enough, has a pool and is only 580 TB a night. It's a 5 minute walk to the skytrain which makes a huge difference in terms of getting around BK.
Yes, Phuket partying is more likely to go all night because it's pure;y a tourist place so people are looking to socialize. Of course girls will trcak you there pretty aggresively at times, but as I lived there for 2 years and still keep my place there I am biased. Very Happy

Sukhumvit is the area I was actually looking at. Best case scenario is I'll just have to start drinking earlier.. sounds like Nana Plaza is the place. I saw a place called 'Miami Hotel' which sounded pretty good.

I was thinking from there I could walk to Siam Square.. as well as get everywhere else earlier before settling into Sukhumvit for the evening. Just curious, when does public transportation stop running?

Phuket is a distant possibility.. I don't think I'll tire of BKK and Pattaya though.. we'll see.. I might tire more of a huge touristic scene more quickly.. but hard to say.. depends on the moment.. Wink

My contract is up in 2 months but my last day is more dependent on where this contract dispute goes. Don't want to lose the bonus. So I may be done next week or Jan. 1st, or mid-December in which case a strangulation will be in order.

Every time I go to Thailand, 2 or 3 nights is good for Bangkok and then it's down South.

Tiger has it figured out - check out Nana area, Patpong, Chinatown, etc and have a blast!

So many islands down south, though - too many crowds usually, though.
