My principal didn't really just ask me if I sleep with my boyfriend, did she?

Oh yes, she did!

(Pretend we're speaking Korean.)

I put on my best horrified look. "No! Ms X! We are not married!"

"But in America, many people sleep together."

"I am not in America. I am in Korea. We are not married!"

"Oh, very good! You are Korean! No pre-sex!"

Oh. My. God.

Waiting for marriage to have sex is the lamest thing ever.

Why wouldn't you tell her the truth? Smash some of those stereotypes about 'we' do this and 'they' do that. Your boyfriend's Korean, right?

I suppose it depends on what kind of relationship you have with your boss. Mine told me that he'd be in a threesome with me...and he doesn't say that to just anyone.

Twice in the past week I've agreed with you, Jinju. Have the poles flipped or something? Is the planet spinning out of orbit? WTF is going on here?

Yes. He's a very "westernized" Korean. With a great ass. Not one of those flat Korean man butts. Just for the record. Cool

My boss is a very old woman. A very sweet, nice old lady who gives me gifts for no reason and knows three sentences in English, "Oh, you are so beautiful!...Oh my heart is happy...Thank you!"

What did your girlfriend say to that? Have you done it yet?

Any sort of -some with my boss--a twosome, threesome, imaginationsome is NOT on the table for me.

When face to face with a foreigner, Koreans are often so curious that they feel totally free to ask the most personal and invasive questions that (presumably) they wouldn't touch on with another Korean.

next time just say 'Thats a personal question/ Thats not your business". remeber you cerainly don't have to answer any non-work related questions. Don't want to be mean, but... get some spine.

Is your bf Korean? If not I'm sure she was just making an off-hand remark and it's nothing actually to worry about.

He just doesn't do it for me. I kinda doubt he would for my girlfriend either, although somehow he gets the girls coming back. Plus his rampant promiscuity would become a factor if I were to get involved in sexual relations with him. But throw in his wife and there'd be something I'd have to consider.

The proper answer to any question like this, in the Western world or in Korea, is "That is an inappropriate question in this professional setting."

Fuck giving an answer to that.

I gave an answer of some sort because I was in shock.

Luckily, I talk to this woman all of five minutes a week. I'm not really worried about my answer or her question, just...oh Korea. Koreans are so weird.

Yu_Bum_suk, yes, he's Korean.

you know with the older generation, just have some tact.

its customary to call your gf or bf just a "friend".

many times, i told my parents "she's just a friend" (even tho she is korean or <insert ethnicity>) even tho we are seriously dating.

in korean culture, especially to older generation, just call them your "friend" until you are engaged. thats when it becomes "real" in their eyes... even tho the feelings between you two may be more than a friend. the older generation tend to worry a lot, which means in a weird way, that they care.

Korea has this effect of throwing totally unexpected stuff at you which you will never encounter in the west.

Key is to know what to expect and be prepared. (Which takes years btw).

For example: I now expect:-

* Cars to plow through the pedestrian crossing regardless for 10 seconds after the lights have changed.
* Koreans to assume i am American and have several other media-fed stereotypival perceptions
* Koreans to ask personal questions

etc etc

You're back.

She already knows I have a boyfriend. She asked everyone when we were having lunch this summer. I answered as my (Korean!) coworkers did.
