Well - why? Did you have friends who got you a job? Did you hear there was more money to be made?

I personally chose Korea over Japan because the Japanese culture isn't completely new to me. I also prefer the everyday "spice" of Koreans vs the politeness of Japan.

EDIT: I think I prefer it - I'm not in Korea yet. It might turn out to be an overload of "spices" but who knows. I may love it - I may eat my words in a few months! Very Happy

Yep that goes for me too.
After that initial hit it became a hard habit to break. Easy cash, easy job, anytime.

But the new visa regs may finally change all that.

Back in 2000, I considered going to Japan via the JET program, but they had a bizarre rule that said you had to be a citizen of the country you're applying from. I'm a citizen of the UK but just a resident of New Zealand, which means I can do everything except become a politician there, but it would have meant that I would have had to fly to the UK to apply for JET! Screw that!

Saw an ad in the New Zealand Herald a couple of months later that said "Teach English in Korea," decided to take it. If it had said Japan or Taiwan instead, and had similar conditions, I'd be there instead. It's funny how ultimately monumental decsions depond on things like that...I remember the exact moment I saw the paper: what if I hadn't decided I needed a coffee right then, and/or hadn't seen the paper next to me? What if I'd read the paper the day before or the day after instead? Smile

Do you think the new visa regs will have an impact then? There surely can't be many teachers who have prior convictions or.... well, yeah the drug thing probably.

There were 2 ads in the pager for Japan and when things didn't click for me with Nova and Geos, Korea was really the only other choice because there were 2 pages of ads.
