As regards the thread on phasing native teachers out, I don't dispute the poster's claim, but I think if this plan of phasing native teachers out by 2010 is definite, I would have thought the idea would have been suggested/hinted at, publically in some way, already.

Because if it is true a presidential candidate has promised this, I would have expected one of the English language Korean media to have talked about it. That would be quite a radical step to take.

I sincerely hope whichever candidate wants to phase us out, doesn't win.

With the recent GEPIK debacle, surrounding verification of our degrees, I hope similar incompetence occurs as regards wiping native teachers out.

I want the option of teaching here forever if I want to, how rude of the Korean government to consider ending my career!

If it seems we will be pushed out, esl teachers ought to set up some form of pressure group to outline how utterly essential we are to the existence of credible English in Korea.

If they had Koreans only teaching English, I honestly think their student's standard of English will inevitably decline even further.

Phasing native teachers out?!!! That's outrageous!!! Shocked

Wait and see.

There are nothing but mixed messages on this topic. (ANd we haven't seen a link yet to back up the other rumor). There's another candidate who's talking about putting a foreigner in every school and teaching some classes in English, so that's the other end of the spectrum.

Some counties have already begun phasing out native speakers in all the public schools, and have instead invested in these English Towns and put all the foreigners there.

The Korean bosses need to take a hard look at how the whiteyinpublicschools system is running/failing, but I have a feeling that introspection will lead to more blame laid on us.

I always wanted to know what life on a reservation would be like.

For some reason I find it very hard to believe they will phase us out - it's a huge industry. If they phase us out, what are the recruiters going to do?

Also, phasing foreign teachers out just means more kids will go abroad, at least for those that can afford it.

Furthermore - a lot of universities are just starting English only immersion programmes... and universities have a lot of say on how things are run here. Phasing foreign teachers out means losing their appeal and their strive to get recognised internationally.

It may happen eventually, but right now, when English is still the Global language, phasing foreign teachers out doesn't make sense.

The Korean ESL industry is widely recognized as being bloated. Recognize a too- good-thing when you see it and have an exit strategy.
