John Coltrane's Blue Train is one of my favourite jazz records.
Kenny Burrell is also good.
Miles Davis' Kind of Blue is an all-time classic.
Dizzy Gillespie's Jambo Caribe is a great record that incorporates aspects of jazz and calypso. Brilliant stuff.
That's just off the top of my head. |

I'm a jazz novice myself. I think there is lots of good advice here, many artists I've enjoyed as I've eased into jazz, and many new to me that I'm putting on my own list to check out (thanks everyone!).
Absolutely get Miles Davis's Kind of Blue, and if you like that, Cannonball Adderley's Somethin' Else.
If you come from an electric pop/rock background, as I do, you also may enjoy Herbie Hancock's Headhunters. I've never really gotten into electric jazz/fusion stuff, but I fell in love with this album. It's seriously funky and a lot of fun.
I second and third Stan Getz, Louis Armstrong, and Ella Fitzgerald. And I'd add Etta James and Nina Simone to the list (apologies if they've also already been mentioned). |

How about Jacques Loussier? Saw him in Daejeon a couple years ago. Good group. |

Bill Dixon
Anthony Braxton
Art Ensemble of Chicago
New York Art Quartet
Marion Brown
Archie Shepp
Wadada Leo Smith
are among my favorites. The Dixon, in particular, is woefully under-heard, but some of the most gorgeous, rigorously-conceived, passionately-executed music I've ever encountered, in any genre. My top picks of his music include both Vade Mecums and In Italy. |

Dave Brubeck - Take Time
Lester Young and Teddy Wilson - Prez and Teddy
anything with John Coltrane
Duke Ellington - Live at the Whitney
Newer stuff I'm not that fond of but Diana Krall is quite good.
and I love Herbie Hancock's Headhunters.
I like Dexter Gordon a lot but he's not especially melodic (and I'm biased cause I play tenor). |
