I have only made a few post here, but have recieved great responses. I have decided that teaching in Korea is what I would like to do for the next phase of my life. I have read this forum for the last month or so, and talked to several people there and in other countries teaching. I have an interview for an international school on Thursday.
My dilema is this, I believe I would be happier teaching in Busan. I live near the beach now, and prefer the more mild climate over more Northern Korean cities. Also I do not want to live in the sticks. I want to have an experience. I have several years of teaching experience in the states, as well as a masters degree. The job I will be interviewing pays between 2.5 - 2.8 won a month, plus the accomodations. I also want to bring my dog with me (although I may leave him with my brother).
The questions
1. Is Youngin, Gyeonggi, South Korea. very far from the city?
2. Should I keep holding out until I find a more sutible position in Busan, even if it means making less?
3. What type of questions should I ask in this interview to learn more about the school (the website is in korean)?
Thank you for your help! |

It's a 3-hour express train ride from Busan to Seoul. From there, you'll have to travel via bus, local train, and/or taxi to your final destination in Gyeonggi Province (the province encircles Seoul). The express train ride itself costs, one way, about $43 for coach, $50 for the movie car, or $63 for first class. |

I wonder if this is the school in Youngin that C.P. Neil worked at.
Anyway, I'd say take it if you get it and try for Busan after a year in Korea. But, Busan's not that cool. You'd be better off at a good school anywhere in Korea than any old school in a single part of Korea to which you want to go. |

yes, but workable
2. Should I keep holding out until I find a more sutible position in Busan, even if it means making less?
HAPPIENESS is more inportant than money in Korea....
3. What type of questions should I ask in this interview to learn more about the school (the website is in korean)?
with your exp go public in march
I am in Busan.........it is an OK city...and you could be very far from the beach here ....depends on the dong.
I liked Seoul better but thats always a personal choice thing
Good luck |

if you have the school i am thinking of, in jangsan on the dalmajji road, then you will love it. its a wonderful school with a great program, in a very beautiful location. if i had a teachers license (hopefully an MA TESOL might swing it in the future) i would have no hestiation to apply for there. IMO it would be one of the best positions in korea hands down. as for busan, been in busan for 4 years and i love it! |

thank you for your comments. I am moving from a beach area, so that is why I thought the beach would be the best place to go. I am still open though. The school is Taehwa International. I know I probably shouldn't post that here, but I do not have PM capabilities yet. From the website, it seems to be an exclusive school. I have never taught in a tie (and will probably try to wrangle out of it is possible). I will talk to them tomorrow and see what comes of the conversation. |
