One of the most disingenuous annual surveys--and the most widely read in the U.S.--is by U.S. News and World Report.

Almost every year the top 10 spots change--of course this has nothing to do with selling more magazines by stroking different egos.

A dependable survey would need to draw a distinction between the quality of undergraduate and graduate education.

While I didn't attend one, the prestigious small liberal arts colleges like Wesleyan, Carleton, Rice, Amherst, etc. usually get short shrift in world surveys but arguably provide some of the finest undergraduate education because of their focus on teaching rather than research.

And therein lies another distinction that isn't usually made.

In the humanities at least, the best Asian university doesn't even break the top 50 in my book.

Interestingly enough, KAIST in Daejeon is sometimes listed as the best university in Korea despite what the "SKY" people insist is the case.

And what good is a Nobel laureate if he or she doesn't do much teaching of any kind? Yes, research is important but so is imparting one's expertise instead of relying on TA's, many of whom aren't even fluent in English. I'd be curious to see a list of schools that require their stellar faculty to teach undergraduate courses, if only the honors sections. That would speak volumes.

Well, to its credit, the US News does a great job with its Liberal Arts college rankings (I am biased, I'll admit).

I agree with you though. You may be surprised to hear that there's a real boom in interest in the Williams/Amherst/Swarthmore axis from students at Korea's top foreign language high schools these days. Kids who have been there a few years have reported back, and interest is seriously on the rise here.

If this was a list of party schools, my uni would be ranked in the top 10.
We had a class schedule DESIGNED for partying.
You could go to class Mon-Tues-Wed, then be free until next week. That's 5 nights of drinking from Wed-to-Sun.
In fact I think my uni was the reason why some schools are now requiring professors to schedule exams on Friday.

Let's just put it out there:

Generally...

Korean universities are crap.
Korean universities let failures pass.
Korean universities tolerate bribes.
Korean universities lack ethics.
Korean universities aren't shit overseas.
Korean universities can't compete.
Korean universities love plagiarism.
Korean universities make false claims.
Korean universities have hot girls.

Sheeeeeit...Even the best one they've got doesn't rate the fifty best in the world. Sounds kind of like their football team.
