You have to get a letter from your current employeer saying that he has released you from your contract before you can accept another job. But that doesn't mean you can't start looking for a new job.
When I got here in 1998, I was working in a hagwon. After about 6 months, I decided enough is enough. SO, I interviewed for a university position. Once I knew for sure that I got the new job, I told the hagwon's manager that I wanted to change jobs and asked for a letter of release. She talked to the owner, he agreed and I got my letter the next week.
Find a new job, then ask for the letter. It's usually not a big deal, but if he won't give you one, then you will have to finish the contract, or leave Korea and look for a job from your home country. |

When you say your director is a f***, I assume what you mean is that he's a lieing, dishonest, sneaky, low life.
If that's the case, then that's great.
What you need to do to make sure you get all of your pay and a letter of release is dig up some dirt on the dude.
Has he been paying your, and others medical insurance?
Has he been paying into the pension scheme?
Has he registered you with the education department?
Has he remitted your taxes?
Is he paying sufficient taxes?
Get a list of enrolled students, I can assure you he's only declaring half to the tax authorities.
Blackmail, that's all there is to it.
Oh yea, make sure you get a glowing reference. |

Way to go Goldmember; tell the guy to break the law. I'm sure your advise is just what he needs to hear at this point. Even if his boss is doing (errr not doing) everything you listed, the OP does not need to resort to blackmail to get a letter of release. All he has to do is ask for one. If the hagwon refuses, he can go to the labor board in his area and they can help him. |

Lets get a few things straight.
You are on your own.
You are thousands of miles away from home.
If the director is a shithouse, then he is going to
roger your arsehole until you walk out of the departure lounge
at Incheon airport bowlegged.
All these people on here who slag you off for pulling a 'midnight run'
will not be there to help you when the shit hits the fan.
Fuck them and their 'advice'.
If you think you are going to get shafted then get the hell out of there, you know this *beep* of a boss better than any of us lot! Do what you think is right in your interests.
That I think is a lot more important than any letter of release, any end of
contract flight or bonus which is what? a lousy 2 grand which is nothing to sneeze at but it isn't worth fucking around with your mental state. |

basically this guy does absolutly everything to make sure the working day is as stressful and unpleasant as possible.....in terms of doin the dirty....i havent paid any tax or any pension, so he is definatly breakin a few laws....maybe if he refuses to co-operate with my release... i cud start threatening!
another prob someone has mentioned to me is the face that if i finish a contract early...then it looks bad on a cv, and gettin a new job may be difficult..i.e....the new director ringing the old one!... in terms of severance though, im happy to say good-bye to that! if it was only 3 months left..cud possible hold out, but not 6 months!
still a little unsure wat to do! |

It's a toss up. You either stay and put up with this rubbish or you quit and make a break for it. These people aren't worth the space. You leave, warn others on here about the school. He'll have trouble finding a new native teacher and go bust. That's always the ideal scenario.
With regards to the CV. You can put down that you worked six months. or just leave it off all together. It's not worth worrying about the CV when it comes to people like that. As discussed in a previous thread references are very rarely good, why would they want to let a teacher go and work for the competition? Your next employer probably isn't really going to be that bothered about this job. They'll very rarely ask for a reference or cv. Immigration doesn't keep track of your employers so you can just deny all knowledge of having any previous job, and start afresh. But mainly learn from the experience.
Who's also to say that he won't pull the dirty on you when your contract is up. Eleven month firings are very common. |
