What? No 'Maria'? No 'Tell Me'? Confused

At the height of the Maria craze I would show the original
Blondie video. They now know how old the song is and
that it was originally in English. That's education.

Jimi Hendrix - Purple Haze

Nominating this song is an act of rebellion thus its and act of Rock n' Roll.
Jimi Hendrix is a Negro thus the nomination is a civil rights action.

This song also contained a "seminal" Gay rights act, namely the line "Excuse me while I kiss this guy". Jimi Hendrix was an early Gay rights reformer.

Its got winner all over it.

Is it possible for you to go a day without posting something utterly moronic?

Right now, the answer seems to be "no"

Seconded.

You can go ahead and call me or my statements moronic if you want, thats what free expression is about. You fail when you didn't substantiate your claim.

What? You didn't make my "seminal" joke? Thats fine, to me matches the slyness of "oops slip of the tounge"aspect of Purple Haze. To be fair, Hendrix didn't plan for that, it was however capitalized by the rock scene to that effect. It is a clever piece pro-gay subversiveness.

I'm quite sincere about Purple Haze being the best rock song ever. It was played at Woodstock, it came after The "Star Spangled Banner" and it sounds like a song about being high. It really is the BEST ROCK SONG EVER especially compared to Supertramp music.

Did you not like the Negro comment? Well I had to do some affirmative damage contral after recommending a Black-person-free Jazz music list to a first time Jazz listener. Jazz has even more Black people that rock does and I had navigate that intricacy.

Again, if you want to make an argument, you have to substantiate it if you want credibility.

yingwenlaoshi: It was a toss up between that, & 'Puppy Love' by Donny Osmond. (I'm being VERY tongue in cheek here).

Black Night - Deep Purple
Metal Guru - T Rex
Won't get Fooled Again - Who
Get Back - Beatles

I was made for loving you - Kiss
Pride - U2
Orange Crush - REM
Shout - Tears for Fears
Don't you forget about me - Simple Minds

Tough to argue with most of the list. Lots of classic rock staples.
I feel compelled to make a few nominations:

CCR's "Fortunate Son" -nothing beats it for righteous, blue-collar, rebellious anger.

The Beatles- there are too many greats, but as a previous poster pointed out, much of what they did occupies that grey area between pop and rock, if we agree that rock connotes a bit heavier or rougher tinge. Still, the last half or so of Abbey Road, from "Mean Mr. Mustard" to the end, blows me away every time.

The Doors- "Roadhouse Blues." Makes me want to drink beer and work on my car. Not their best song, but definitely their best strictly rock song.

My own personal weakness- The Velvet Underground. I don't think anyone on the planet was playing like they were playing at the time on White Light/White Heat. They destroy everything and everyone on that album, MC5 and The Stooges included. They're a tough sell, it's a pretty fine line between noise and ecstasy on songs like "Sister Ray" and "I Heard Her Call My Name."

That's all that comes to mind at the moment, but I'll probably end up thinking about this all day. The only thing I'm sure of is that the best single line in all of rock is, "Suckin' on a chili dog outside the Tasty Freeze," from "Jack and Diane." Not sure if this is as seminal as the Hendrix guy kissin' stuff though, which I thought was rather funny. I suspect that Tony Baloney fellow didn't need the lyrics corrected for him. That reminds me of that other AC/DC classic no one has mentioned yet, "Thirty Thieves and the Thunder Chief."

The Beatles rocked, period. Nearly everyone that came after (including the Stones) jacked their style. They were a self-made band and knew their *beep* better than most. They weren't faking it, they were the most bad ass band of the bunch (despite their initial 'cute' image).

I could never be assed with the Doors. Just seems like pretensious crap, and the lyrics don't seem special to me. Just my opinion.

Hold on, let me turn down "Yellow Submarine" long enough to collect my thoughts and respond. It's hard to think straight in the face of such a raucous assault on propriety.

Cheap shot aside, I think you're right. There's no such thing as hyperbole when talking about the greatness and importance of The Beatles. I wouldn't trade them for anyone, given one band to listen to the rest of my days. They're the Shakespeare of pop/rock. They had their precursors and influences and outdid them all. In turn, they influenced everyone who came after and were outdone by none.

BUT, what if we include elements of sex and danger in the definition of rock in our quest for the greatest rock song? "I Want to Hold Your Hand" vs. "Satisfaction"? Please. "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" vs. MC5's "Ramblin' Rose"? Get outta here.

Obviously my choice of songs is calculated, but take The White Album. There are parts that rock harder than anything The Beatles ever recorded, but the Stones' Beggar's Banquet came out the same year and, while there's no "Helter Skelter" to be found, songs like "Street Fighting Man" and "Stray Cat Blues" get me in the guts and the groin in a way nothing by The Beatles does.

Whaddya think? Are sex and danger necessary ingredients for rock? Is my definition too narrow? I consider rock a genre of pop, and think of The Beatles as the best pop band ever, who excelled at playing rock when they wanted to. They weren't a wimpy rock band, they were just bigger than rock.

As for best rock line/lyrics, I love "Time" by Pink Floyd.

From the top of my head (so it could be somewhat wrong):

You run and you run to catch up with the sun but its sinking
Only to come up around and catch up with you again.
The sun is the same in a relative way but your older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Beatles are great too. Most of their great stuff was very art prog/progressive but not all that rocky. I still love a lot of their music.

Love the Doors too! Roadhouse Blues has one of the great lines of rock history if you ask me:

Woke up this morning and got myself a beer/Woke up this morning and got myself a beer/The future uncertain and the end is always near.

Today's selections from the Blurgalurgalurgal vault are the Ramones "Chainsaw," Buddy Holly and the Crickets' "Rave On," and "Sloop John B," sung by Mefirst and the Gimmiegimmies--NOT the fruity twee Beach Boys original version.
