| I think the term feminist is relative. I personally prefer a woman who is somewhat traditional but also modern. A woman who emphasizes so much how she is independent doesn't appeal to me anymore than the Korean types who want you to change a light bulb for them. I like someone kind of in the middle. Some feminists act like they don't need males but then go looking for them.... They often want to have their cake and eat it, too. I am not sure strident feminists make better lovers. They don't really interest me, and I consider myself modern but with a healthy respect for tradition, thank you very much.. |

[quote="Big_Bird"]
One day, when you are an old man, and you have a daughter in her 40s or 50s, will you still think it so cool to hear people denigrating your beloved child for not looking so hot? Will you feel sad when you realise that the daughter you cherished is no longer valued by society because her sexual appeal has dimmed?[quote]
Sorry I couldn't reply more thoughtfully. I've been very busy all weekend. And I couldn't give a well thought-out response as I was in a hurry. But now that I have some time, I will.
Honestly I could give a crap less if society won't consider my own daughter "hot" when she turns 40 or 50. I know for a fact I am not going to lose any sleep over the fact that people will not consider me "hot" at 40 or 50. And I don't give a damn what society thinks as long as I am happy with myself. And my daughter shouldn't either. If we (men or women) are going to let ourselves become enslaved to society's perception of "idealized external beauty" then can't it be said that we are letting ourselves get oppressed?
I would like to teach my own daughter to value her achievements and accomplishments and to feel convinced that she is and feels beautiful for herself and not for society's superficial standards of beauty or anyone else's for that matter. I'd like to teach her to define beauty for herself and to not let society define that for her. That is all that matters.
So the answer to your final question is "hell f--ing no!" Your rhetoricals are laughable. If you let yourself get shaped and/or controlled by what glam society's superficial perception of you based on your looks, then you are a retard. A lot of society is superficial. Get over it.
Rebuking me for making a subjective comment about a fringe feminist celebrity's looks does absolutely nothing except paint you as a feminist on the fringe like her. Is it not fringe-like behavior to take a man's comments and scan them in such a nit-picky way to see if somehow his subjective comment about a fringe feminist's looks somehow promotes the "oppressive chauvanist juggernaut?" Seems like neurotic abnormal behavior to me (not unlike vegans who rebuke me for liking eggs or having pets; but that's neither here nor there). Calling my excuses "bollocks" and implying that I am some kind of "worm" or "snake" (i.e. writhing, squirming, blah, blah blah, oh no!), etc. instead of offering some sensible counterpoint doesn't seem to paint you as the moderate you are claiming to be. But then again you don't really give a "rat's arse" what I think, so it's really a moot point.
By ragging on your replies, I am not ragging on feminism and I hope no one perceives it as such. I totally support any moderate movement that lobbies and helps empower women and promotes equitable outcomes and equality in all facets of life: moral, political, socio-economic, etc. (In fact I often comment on how Korean society is long overdue for a solid and effective feminist movement). So it's just you. |
