| because ending subsidies for oil companies and related services (e.g. roads) is a better and more 'american' way to reduce oil consumption, which is your aim, am i correct? |

Why is that a reason not to increase the gas tax?
How will ending subsidies to the oil companies lead to less consumption?
How will not funding roads lead to less consumption
By the way since getting oil from the US costs more than getting oil from getting oil the mideast do you think your policy will get the US to import less oil from the mideast or less oil from the mideast.
By the way not funding roads will perhaps mean that Americans will just use less direct transportation routes and thus use more oil.
By the way if the US can more clean coal powerplants today would the US use more oil or less oil? |

By making it easier for non-oil related energy companies to compete, I assume? |

wouldn't that just get them to import more oil from the mideast and Venezula?
Is that a good thing or a bad thing for US security? |

| ending subsidies would increase the price of gas because drivers would be paying for the REAL cost of driving (including the roads they drive on), so they would buy less gas... i believe we've been through this argument a number of times now... |

Or it would just get the US not to drill in the US and just get more oil from the mideast.
If you don't spend money on Roads then drivers might take more indirect routes .
Anway the roads are there now. What are you going to do about it?
anway why not raise the gas tax now?
If the US had more clean coal plants would the US import more oil or less oil ?
If the US had a a hydogen infrastructure would the US import more oil or less oil?
We are having this discussion now cause you didn't respond w/ a good answer.
Shame on Ron Paul for voting against government funding of alternative energy and shame on him for voting against the gas tax.
By the way Ron Paul who you think is against government spending is not above getting lots of pork projects for his own district.
Then he compalins about government spending. The guy is a hypocrite. |

how much does the government spend annually to keep the roads in shape? (yes, even 'indirect' routes require upkeep)
if the price of gas included 100% of the costs of road maintenance (as well as construction), the price would go up and consumption would go down... plus, the tax money previously spent on roads could go to something useful instead!
i'm sure we would quickly come to the realization that rail travel is a much better form of transportation... |

Isn't rail travel also funded by the federal government?
Anyway that is not a reason not to increase gas taxes.
I think the roads and bridges would also become unsafe. Plus while the US economy was switching over there would be a negative effect on productivity , which would lead to lower tax revenues.
anway US national security priority #1 ought to be to get off mideast oil
If the US had a hydorgen infrasturcture , more nulcear plants and coal to oil plants and more domestic oil production would the US have to import more oil or less oil?
Case closed
Shame on Ron Paul. |

It is terrible that the US imports oil from the mideast and Venezuala . Case closed.
If there is a gas tax then people will be forced to buy more fuel effienct cars and drive less.
Case closed. |
