I just wanted to start a thread on the current status of Hongdae Restaurants, and what you like or don't like. I love going to Hongdae, especially on dates with cool Korean girls. But, one must know where and where NOT to take someone. I'll list my two favorite restaurants, and one restaurant to avoid... hope you can all pitch in too.

#1 best: Shanti - Excellent Indian / Nepalese restaurant. Always full of people, very nice interior, play Indian music, reasonable price (around 12,000 each). And the food (curry, samosa, naan) is top notch. The lamb I had there was better than any other place I've been to in Korea yet... I think the chef is a real Nepalese guy... Anyhow, this is an excellent place to impress any girl on a date, as this restaurant is amazing, but not so well known it seems. And if the place is too busy, they take your number and call you when the table is ready... Very nice service, excellent place! Would go there anytime.

#2 best: Casa Maya - I was so surprised with this place. Excellent Mexican restaurant. Last time I was there, we had some great Mexican food, although the burritos were not the best, everything else was pretty good. The interior is full of Mexican stuff, looks very nice, and the music is all Mexican too. Last time I was there, lots of Mexican people were eating and partying there, very loudly... some people might find that annoying, but it added a festive vibe to the place that my date and I thought added to the experience... Anyhow, I think the workers there were Mexicans, but I'm not sure... Anyhow, if Mexican people are going there and eating, and loving it, I'm guessing that says something.

#1 worst: Greek Restaurant across from Triangle park - Sorry, but I forget the name of this place. It's right by Casa Maya, across from the triangle-shaped park in Hongdae. Anyhow, the place looked Greek style, but there was nothing Greek about this place. The salad was one of those bagged salads you can buy at Emart (no feta cheese, not even ANY cheese on the salad) and everything was wrong about this salad... not Greek at all. The Chicken souvlaki I ordered had no taste, was not cooked in the traditional Greek style, and cost 6,000 won for 6 tiny bite sized morsels of chicken. I think I'll stick with chicken on a stick next time for 1,000 won. And the side dish of rice was clearly Korean bokum bap with spaghetti sauce. Terrible! But, the owner seems nice... he should really look up Greek recipes on the internet.

P.S. Brix doesn't have Hummus anymore since they changed the chef. Where can I go now, to eat hummus and enjoy smoking Hookah??

I was going to say something about your Casa Maya comments, then I read the whole thing and realised you were just taking the piss. Casa Maya has got to be the worst Mexican restaurant in Mapo. I mean, ketchup???

princess, I am not sure you are aware of this, but The Rocky Mountain Tavern has a location in Hongdae, and they serve cheesburgers and Big Rock Traditional Ale there-I hope to see you next Sunday! Try looking for the Canadian flag.

anyway, i've eaten at casa maya a couple times. overpriced and food was average (but i'd say above average by korean standards). i remember the chips and fresh salsa being quite good - what did they serve you with a ketchup sauce?

personally,except for the price, i prefer it to dos tacos (by subway). that place just serves rice.

I live in Hongdae and have been to a bunch of the resturants.

Mexican: Dos Tacos is the best, forget Margaritia or Casa Maya. better yet go to Sinchon and On the Border

Indian: Taj, across from the Starbucks, simply the best in the area. expensive but worth it.

Greek: Sandi and Drak across from Shooters, nice little place, not as good as santorini in itaewon but still not bad

havent found good thai food or a steak place, there are a couple of decent Pho places one next to quinzos

I was utterly dissapointed with Shanti when I went there a couple of months back. The worst Indian/Nepalese food I've ever consumed. I recommend not going there.
