My question relates to getting a background check from the United States or New Zealand, but it might be good if anyone knows how to get the background check for other countries that they post that information here as well.

I realize that the new visa regulations aren't set in stone yet, but I would imagine that the criminal check is something that will stick, and we'd rather just get it out of the way than have to try and rush it when we find a job in Korea.

I've tried to contact the US Embassy in Chile where I am living, but they haven't got back to me yet.

Has anyone gotten a hold of their report whilst living in another country?

yes, I have. In the states we have the freedom of information act which allows any joe blow to get acriminal record check on anyone else. So, I had a brother go to the local clerk of court in mycounty and get three certified copies which he Fed-Ex'd to me.

It's far easier for US citizens than for some other countries to get a guy's criminal check. FWIW, the certified copies I have are good enough for my local edu dept.

good luck

the brits won't struggle at all. just download the Subject Access form from your local station's web site, fill it in (making sure you request "information held about you on the National Police Computer"), and send it to your local station (you dont have to go in in person) with 2 forms of ID (i sent my passport and medical card) and 10 and they will process it within 40 days. Then, get someone from your family to forward it on to you! Piece o Piss!!!

Fair enough. Sending your passport from Korea to your local police station is a pain in the ass IMO.

You can fax a photocopy of the page where your photo is. Just needs to be signed by someone to say it's real.
