Someone in another thread wrote "Hongdae needs a napalm strike". This made me laugh, because it's something I've thought about for the city of Seoul in general. There are some nice areas and some pretty cool-looking buildings around, but there's a lot of nastiness out there, too.
So - if you could raze, level, and rebuild at your whim: How much, and what areas in particular? |

In my rougher part of town, anything built prior to 1994 is very uneasy on the eye. |

Yeongdeungpo area for sure. either side funnels in 4 lanes of traffic which get squeezed down to 2. this actually comes down to ONE lane with the cabbies idling in one. so even at midnight traffic is backed up. only time you can buzz through there is around 3-4AM. try it on a Saturday afternoon. And the worst thing is, there is NO WAY around it. |

i agree with racetraitor - alot of the new apartment buildings are real eyesores. giant letters proclaiming SAMSUNG and of course the building's number on the side. always a shade of off-white. absolutely hideous.
but yeah..i stayed near yangpyung station once. GF told me a lot of the buildings were park chun-hee era. one story cement blocks. |

Pretty much all of Jongno, except Insadong.
They need to get rid of the Spaghettia and Starbucks in Insadong, though. |

Why not Insadong? They destroyed Dongdaemoon already. Obviously culturally interesting places must be destroyed. I say the next to go are:
-the rest of Dongdaemoon
-Namdaemoon
-Insadong
-Ehwa Women's University
-bulldoze Namsan and build a giant Lotte Castle in its place |

So much of genuine "olde Seoul" was destroyed anyway by the war and reconstruction afterwards. Yes, it would be a shame if some pre-war neighborhoods were demolished but nearly all of the construction that goes on in Seoul is to replace terrible post-war villa-style neighborhoods built in the 60's and 70's, which have become horrible places to live in. I agree with you that these places have more 'soul' than high-rises but if you ask the people there, nearly all of them would want to live in a nice, new high-rise.
Which raises the real problem. After the 60's/70's villa neighborhoods have been re-developed with nice, new 'Richetower' high-rises, can the people who used to live there afford one of these new apartments? Or are they just pushed into another villa neighborhood? |

Buildings built here in the 60s 70s and 80s are fetid crap holes that need to be bulldozed ASAP |

That's another serious problem: real estate is expensive enough as it is. |
