I was at the subway last night and I saw this westerner...just your average looking guy with dark hair. But I noticed from the corner of my eye that he was staring at me. I waited about 10 seconds for him to stop but he kept staring then I met his eyes and he just stared at me with this pissed off look in his eyes. We stared at eachother for about 15 seconds...it made me feel mad and awkward at the same time so then I nodded my head and he nodded his....and he finally looked away. Now this was the first time I have ever seen this guy in my life and I had done nothing but stand there and mind my own business until he started staring at me. Anyways, what is up with weird foreigners around here? I mean, I know there are weirdos everywhere, but in my short time here, I have met some strange westerners in particular. |

Are you sure he wasn't hitting on you? Not that you are gay, but maybe that guy was. Who knows for sure. |

Umm why should what someone else is doing upset you???
It's their problem if they want to stare. Just get on with your own stuff and ignore it. |

I'm sorry but I thought you were quite cute. For a second, I thought we had a connection, but maybe you weren't feeling it. |

Because I'm tired of other foreigners around here wanting you to aknowledge them when you see them like you owe them something just because you are both white |

he just figures that hey, you're a foreigner, he's a foreigner, u should automatically acknowledge him. i think this one happens to all of us over here, and it bugs most ppl a lot.
i once had this weird, much older, middle-Eastern man come up to me after staring at me for ages and demand my email address. he figured that since we're both foreigners, that's acceptable behaviour. anyways, i could only get away by giving a fake one, and he left with a further demand: if i email u, u MUST email me back... what a creeper |

Smile and nod, smile and nod. Move on. That's all.
I've had weird encounters like this too. But I think its more of mutual awkwardness than weirdness.
EDIT: Didn't read your whole post the first time.

That's ridiculous. People should mind their own business or at least have the courteousy to approach you in a friendly manner instead of staring at you for god know how long. |

What I think is more weird is that a foreigner who is making the mildest attempt at being friendly automatically gets written off as a "weirdo." |
Staring straight at your eyes with a pissed off look is not being friendly. I don't mind friendly people even if I get slightly annoyed..as long as they are friendly. |

As I have said before the best way to deal with a situation like that is to walk up to the foreigner and lick his face from his chin to his forehead. right up the middle of his face.
I always find after that most people don't stare anymore. |

Hmm so let me get this straight....
You dont like it when Koreans stare at you because you're a foreigner AND you don't like it when foreigners stare at you because you're a foreigner. Well, when do you like to be stared at?? |

exactly. i don't mind if people nod at me and smile, i do that too. but if someone doesn't see me or i get the feeling that they don't want to be bothered, i don't persist by staring at them, waiting for them to acknowledge my mere presence. that is not being friendly |

Fair enough. I missed the part where there was the awkward stare down. I agree that is somewhat weird behavior. At least there was some mutual acknowledgment (as odd as it was).
I've encountered one moron 3 years ago who blatantly ignore me whilst making eye contact when we were going opposite ways on the sidewalk. I even audibly reacted with obvious annoyance and the *beep* doucherag didn't even bother to turn around, but his arm automatically sprang up with the bird while he kept walking, still refusing to acknowledge me with a greeting. I was in utter shock. I couldn't believe he just did that. I became furious, but thought he was probably just some self-loathing sad sod who was already completely burnt out.
I so wanted to see him out in the bars or in the local foreigner areas to confront him on his bad behavior, but I never saw him.
That kind of behavior is disenchanting and it sometimes makes me want to not even try being fiendly. But if I see other foreigners, I will smile and nod. If I see you, I will smile and nod and move on. That's all. It's friendly enough. |
