Anyone running Vista? Anyone having problems with Vista?

My new laptop should be here sometime this week and I want to head off any Vista problems. So, anyone had any specific issues other than the nonsense with HD/Blu-ray?

It's slow, at least on my new-ish laptop.

I've been running Vista just fine for 9 months now. Stable and secure. The downsides are that it doesn't play some games and you need a pretty strong computer to run it faster, or even at the same speed, as XP. A laptop, eh. I hope it has a fast CPU and at least 2 GB's of RAM.

Core 2 Duo at 2ghz with 2gb ram and 256 geforce 8600m gt

should run fine, i'm more worried about heading certain problems off at the pass. like, it appears based on what i've been reading, the issues with windows defender, etc.

The "plug and play" USB items aren't "plug and play" anymore (on my Vista machine anyway). When I put them in, I have to tell Vista exactly where to look (system32/drivers) for the drivers.
Also the ITunes to IPod video download stopped working. I have to run an extra piece of software on every MP4 to get it to download to the IPOD. These are MP4s that downloaded fine with Windows NT.
My vista machine is back in Bangkok, so sorry can't be more specific on those 2 problems. Happily running NT here in Seoul.

More than enough!

Windows Defender seems to run quietly in the background. I'm not even sure what it does!!

Vista Ultimate is quite fun. The Dreamscene wallpaper is a cute gimmick and the Windows Sidebar is actually quite handy.

The big thing that MS originally sold it on, the 'Longhorn' ability to find files easily, seems to be meaningless.

Yeah, it should play alright. I hope. I didn't spring for the Blu-ray because of the problems with playback degradation. I'm going pc-cillin and I'm going to kill defender if I can. I think I'm set. I wish I had taken programming classes in school.

Windows makes me nervous. Last time I bought a pc it was during the brief window when all machines came with ME. That was a disaster. I'm hoping Vista isn't another ME. It's annoying that, from what I've read, that Vista seems to be a cosmetic upgrade primarily. Pretty is great, but I wanted something that was more stable and better performing than XP. What's with the form over function? And from nerds no less, generally champions of function.

The geek chic net bubble ruined computers. Hipsters and computers should be mutually exclusive.

that's the problem, people are winding back to xp in droves. all major suppliers are also offering xp again ... vista is turning into the new ME.

honestly, i like xp. i think it's pretty solid now that they've got a lot of the crap worked out.

vista is a lemon ... and yes, i've used it. hated it. uninstalled it.

it's the most bloated software i've ever seen ... nice bells and whistles though.

i run a dual boot xp and linux. linux for life, xp for games ... i couldn't be happier! Smile

Last week I got a computer like yours. A little better, actually. I decided to go with Vista.

Have you seen those PC vs Mac commercials? It was just like that. Bloated with programs I didn't need. All kinds of confirm? or deny? dialog boxes. And just slow. Slower than I expected on a new machine like that.

After a few hours I pulled out our xp disk and installed it. I guess it depends on the person using the computer, but I'm not the kind of chap who likes tweaking his operating system for hours. I have work or play I want to get to.

Yeah, I have the xp disc from my last computer. I think it should work if needs be. I am dreading finding all the stupid drivers though. I wish Dell would have taken its head out of its bottom and kept XP as an option. Making companies ONLY offer Vista is one of the reasons I'm not a huge microsoft fan. (I'm assuming they probably exert some pressure on huge manufacturers/distributers like Dell. I don't think it's a stretch.)
