Truth and Deceit
By BOB HERBERT

When he accepted the Republican nomination for president in 1968, Richard Nixon said, "Let us begin by committing ourselves to the truth - to see it as it is, and tell it like it is - to find the truth, to speak the truth, and to live the truth."

We've now learned, thanks to Vanity Fair, that a former top F.B.I. official, W. Mark Felt, was the legendary confidential source Deep Throat. I can't think of a better time to resurrect the Watergate saga.

The trauma of Watergate, which brought down a president who seemed pathologically compelled to deceive, came toward the end of that extended exercise in governmental folly and deceit, Vietnam. Taken together, these two disasters, both of which shook the nation, provided a case study in how citizens should view their government: with extreme skepticism.

Trust, said Ronald Reagan, but verify.

Now, with George W. Bush in charge, the nation is mired in yet another tragic period marked by incompetence, duplicity, bad faith and outright lies coming once again from the very top of the government. Just last month we had the disclosure of a previously secret British government memorandum that offered further confirmation that the American public and the world were spoon-fed bogus information by the Bush administration in the run-up to the invasion of Iraq.

President Bush, as we know, wanted to remove Saddam Hussein through military action. With that in mind, the memo damningly explained, "the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy."

That's the kind of deceit that was in play as American men and women were suiting up and marching off to combat at the president's command. Mr. Bush wanted war, and he got it. Many thousands have died as a result.

Even in Afghanistan, where the U.S. had legitimate reasons for going to war, the lies have been legion. Pat Tillman, for example, was a popular N.F.L. player who, in a burst of patriotism after Sept. 11, gave up a $3.6 million contract with the Arizona Cardinals to join the Army Rangers. He was sent first to Iraq, and then to Afghanistan, where he was shot to death by members of his own unit who mistook him for the enemy.

Instead of disclosing that Corporal Tillman had died tragically in a friendly fire incident, the Army spun a phony tale of heroism for his family and the nation. According to the Army, Corporal Tillman had been killed by enemy fire as he stormed a hill. Soldiers who knew the truth were ordered to keep quiet about the matter. Corporal Tillman's family was not told how he really died until after a nationally televised memorial service that recruiters viewed as a public relations bonanza.

Mary Tillman, Corporal Tillman's mother, told The Washington Post:

"The military let him down. The administration let him down. It was a sign of disrespect. The fact that he was the ultimate team player and he watched his own men kill him is absolutely heartbreaking and tragic. The fact that they lied about it afterward is disgusting."

At a press conference on Tuesday, President Bush, speaking about detainees who had complained of being abused, said they were "people that had been trained in some instances to disassemble - that means not tell the truth." Mr. Bush meant, of course, to say dissemble, which really means to deliberately mislead or conceal. Nevertheless, he knew what he was talking about. The president may have stumbled over the pronunciation, but he's proved time and again that he's a skillful practitioner of the art.

The lessons of Watergate and Vietnam are that the checks and balances embedded in the national government by the founding fathers (and which the Bush administration is trying mightily to destroy) are absolutely crucial if American-style democracy is to survive, and that a truly free and unfettered press (which the Bush administration is trying mightily to intimidate) is as important now as it's ever been.

There you have it in a nutshell. Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon, drunk with power and insufficiently restrained, took the nation on hair-raising journeys that were as unnecessary as they were destructive. Now, in the first years of the 21st century, George W. Bush is doing the same.

Congress and an aggressive press ultimately played crucial roles in bringing the truth about Vietnam and Watergate to light.

A similar challenge exists today. We'll see how it plays out.

*******

If the checks and balances (and an aggressive press) were what brought Nixon down, and that the outcome of Vietnam/Watergate was extreme skepticism, then my question is this: Can another Watergate follow Gulf War II?

(I agreed with Colin Powell that the lesson to be learned from Vietnam was that the government must not take the country into war again without full support of the people with Congress openly committed and with specific military goals carefully set out and an exit strategy planned for when the objectives were accomplished. Bush ignored Powell and me, so I guess that lesson was wrong or the lesson wasn't learned.)

Ya-ta Boy knows the story because "he was there" Well , British Educator John Simkin was there too.

John Simkin writes:

Over the years I have argued on the forum that Richard Nixon was removed by the CIA. The strategy used by the CIA was more sophisticated than the one used against JFK. Both men attempted to undermine the power of the CIA. The source of JFKs demise was Cuba.

Nixons removal was the result of appointing James Schlesinger as director of the CIA.

Nixons removal became inevitable after Schlesinger issued a directive to all CIA employees on 9th May, 1973: I have ordered all senior operating officials of this Agency to report to me immediately on any activities now going on, or might have gone on in the past, which might be considered to be outside the legislative charter of this Agency.

I hereby direct every person presently employed by CIA to report to me on any such activities of which he has knowledge. I invite all ex-employees to do the same. Anyone who has such information should call my secretary and say that he wishes to talk to me about activities outside the CIAs charter.

So you agree then that the CIA had Nixon removed. Welcome aboard.

Nixon cronie, E Howard Hunt:

By the time of the Watergate burglary, Hunt was already moonlighting as a spy novelist. He has since penned dozens of books, including a memoir and "Dragon Teeth," a thriller published this May.

In 1981, Hunt won $650,000 in a libel suit against the Liberty Lobby for a 1978 article that appeared in the right-wing group's conspiracy-minded newspaper, The Spotlight. The article linked Hunt to the assassination of John F. Kennedy, suggesting the CIA man was in Dallas on the day of the 1963 shooting. Mark Lane, author of the best-selling "Rush to Judgment," successfully defended Liberty Lobby in a second trial in 1985, overturning the original libel award. Lane outlined his theory about Hunt's and the CIA's role in Kennedy's murder in a 1991 book, "Plausible Denial."

This is quite similar to what appears to be happening now. There is a wing of the ruling class that is opposed to Bush's enormous expenditures to accomplish global domination because the stability of the dollar is being threatened. This wing is currently represented most visibly by Zbigniew Brzezinski, who broke ranks when he testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee this summer that "There are three words which represent the BIG LIE: 'WAR ON TERROR.'

The CIA may now actually be the ones to save us from Bush's declaring martial law and cancelling the elections. It is opposed to Bush not only because he dared to name a Director of National Intelligence. This is evidenced by the timing of the release of The Family Jewels.

The Family Jewels are 702 pages released on June 26, 2007 by CIA Dir. Michael Hayden in response to a 1992 request (yes, 15 years later!) by the National Security Archive seeking documents that had been prepared by then-CIA director Colby. This had been initiated by CIA James Schlesinger in response to a 1973 directive he issued directing senior agency officials to provide an accounting of all CIA activities that had been carried out in violation of the CIAs original charter which had barred it from domestic operations. This was prompted by the arrest of 2 long-time CIA operatives, E. Howard Hunt and James McCord, in connection with the break-in at the Democratic Partys Watergate offices. It exposed broader CIA involvement in dirty tricks carried out by the Nixon administration and as we know carried out by all administrations against political opponents. In the wake of Nixons resignation, Schlesingers successor at the CIA, Wm. Colby, assembled some of the record of the skeletons in the agencys closet and presented them to Pres. Gerald Ford. They stayed there.

Much of the material in the now-released document has been leaked previously or its contents exposed publicly in the course of House and Senate investigations of the agency, i.e. the Pike and Church Committees conducted in the mid-1970s. Until now, CIA had steadfastly refused to release the material. As the NY Times noted, these long-awaited documents leave out a great deal. From the NYT article of June 27 by Mark Mazzetti and Tim Weiner, Files on illegal spying show CIA skeletons from the Cold War:

Large sections are censored showing the CIA still cannot bring itself to exposed all the skeletons. And many activities disclosed many years ago by journalists, Congressional investigators, and a Presidential Commission are not detailed in the paper. TFJ catalogued domestic wiretapping, assassination plots against heads of state, mind control experiments, spying on journalists from the early years of the CIA, as well as spying on and infiltration of dissidents, notably antiwar activists.

Included in the 700+ pages of documents however is one important memorandum of a conversation between President Gerald Ford and Henry Kissinger, then Secretary of State and Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs, and Lt. Gen. Brent Scowcroft, Deputy Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs. This meeting took place Saturday, June 4, 1975 at 8:30am and ended at 12:20pm and it took place in the Oval Office at the WH. Its a very important meeting and specifically, a comment by Kissinger is revelatory.

Kissinger states, Helms said all these stories are just the tip of the iceberg. If they come out, blood will flow, e.g., Robert Kennedy personally managed the operation on the assassination against Fidel Castro.

Kissinger and Ford and Scowcroft talk about how theyre gonna handle this Colby disclosure of the CIAs 25-year involvement with organized assassination and mind control an important aspect of what they are concerned about is mind control - and that goes directly to preparation of programmed assassins. MK Ultra is not just arbitrary implementation of mind control experiments but a focused utilization of the ability to program people to become assassins such as the murder, ironically it would turn out, of Robert Kennedy himself.

Ford asks Kissinger, "What can we do?" Kissinger replies, You might think of Rusk. This is gonna get real rough and you are gonna need someone around who knows the presidency and the national interest. What Colby has done is a disgrace. Should we suspend him? No, but when this is over, you can move him and put in someone else. When the FBI has a hunting license into the CIA, this can end up worse for them than Watergate.

Why are these documents being released now, 15 years after their request? We saw how RFK framed Jimmy Hoffa, bribed witnesses, terrorized witnesses, threatened the families of witnesses, and threatened the lives of witnesses to forge a frame-up of Hoffa. Thats what he also did to Jim Garrison.

Prof. Joan Mellon states on Taking Aim, "When we look at the murders of the 70s, revealed in FJ about Trujillo (JFK did not know about CIAs murder of Trujillo), attempt on Lumumba (which failed but he was murdered anyway), we see the CIA in a position of strength. Now when we look at the CIA today under GWB, we see internecine warfare between Bush and the CIA which mirrors the warfare between JFK and the CIA which led to his death. Heres GWB appointing a Director of National Intelligence, minimizing the role of the CIA, and now we have the CIA, in retaliation against Bush and Cheney, releasing these documents at this moment when Bushs popularity is at an all-time low, when just this July The New Yorker accused Cheney of being malign and having effected a coup detat. At this moment we see an exposure of the worst behavior of the CIA which does not reflect the behavior of the CIA today but rather that of Bush, Cheney, and their justification of torture, their spying on people through the NSA, which mirrors the spying on dissidents of the 60s and 70s (COINTELPRO), and so forth."

Ralph Schoenman on the same show states, "Castro, in an editorial entitled The Killing Machine, was speaking about the release of FJ and asked, 'Why are they doing this now?' He concludes that it is to suggest that it is a thing of the distant past. I think Fidel is way off the mark on this. Keep in mind the fight between CIA and, if you like 'new capital' dependent upon the Pentagon and CIA and engaged in the plan for major wars of occupation with respect to Indochina, whereas the Kennedy brothers and eastern capital felt that this was reckless endangerment of the interests of capital, and setting loose forces they couldnt control in the long run, especially within the US. These disputes, although they culminated in a coup detat with the execution of both Kennedys, are replayed again today with Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld, the so-called 'neo-cons', that wing of capital that has bought into permanent war, WW4, the necessity for catastrophic events like Pearl Harbor to create the conditions for the pursuit of these genocidal schemes, unfolding in the genocidal war on Iraq, the targeting of 60 countries for a permanent war condition that Cheney, Wolfowitz and the other architects of the Project for a New American Century project will last another 50-60 years."

"There is another wing of capital, articulated most clearly by the voice of Zbigniew Brzezinski, who 6 wk ago on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, 'There are 3 words which represent the big lie of our time, and they are war on terror.' He breaks ranks as he testifies, So lunatic and so unhinged is this rush into expanding the occupying agenda to targeting Iran, even with tactical nuclear weapons, that Brzezinski told the FRC, Be prepared. They will stage an attack within the US and impute it to Iran. He went on to disclose the contents of a memorandum that was the secret discussions between Bush and Blair just prior to war being launched against Iraq, in which B&B talk about how selling the war on the basis of WMDs will not succeed so they will have to, as ZB stated, stage a spectacular event in order to gain the rationale, cover, and pretext for their war planned on Iraq.

"The same is now true for Iran. Brzezinski sounds the alarm. A whole sector of the ruling class would rather deal as the Kennedys would with Indochina: with the Phoenix program, with killer squads, with the assassination programs for which Lansdale was famous as opposed to massive troop involvement. The so-called 'capitalist peace' of the Kennedy bros that Brzezinski is now espousing involves blockading Iran, special forces in Iran, creating a putsch but not a full-scale war."

"The release of TFJ now is a shot across the bow of the Bush administration because it documents what? Unbridled surveillance, abrogation of all the rights of citizens in the country, removal of any pretense that there is the right to a fair trial. That is what Bush with his PATRIOT Act has been doing. So the timing of the release of FJ with Bushs popularity at a low point puts the administration in a difficult position because they are disclosing that this is the standard procedure, that the Bush administration is engaging in this very stuff that they are calling a crime against rights in the US coming from the highest places of authority."

Yeah, but I stopped reading it when you said Bush was going to try to cancel the elections.

If that does happen, I promise to return and read the post in full. Also, I will owe you a Coke.

Well, I didn't say it first, and I am not the only one. Indeed, it is exactly that fear that is keeping Mass. Rep. John Olver from introducing articles of impeachment against Bush.

I now believe, however, that is less of a possibility since learning how much Bush has pissed off the CIA. (Sorry, but you'll have to read that above post of mine to understand why.) It seems they won't support him in canceling elections and declaring martial law as they are siding against his permanent war faction of capital and instead with those who prefer their counterrevolution on the cheap, i.e. death squads, assassinations, etc., so as not to fatally destabilize the dollar.

I can't tell you how nice it is to feel for a change that these CIA guys are my heroes!
