I would venture that anyone who went to Oxford University would have a proper job. |

Meh. 3 years of being grilled and I was happy to avoid a 'proper' job for the past 6 months. |

Cal, Michigan, and UCLA used to be ranked top 10 in US News in the 80s.
A lot of lower tier ivies that produce about 1/10 of the research of those three heavyweights complained and whined, and got the endowment statistic overweighted. It's a very flawed system, as federal cash flow is not seen as the same as interest cash flow from an endowment.
Overall, PhD rankings are still kept rather pure. Which is probably the last bastion of unpoliticized rankings. In that category, Cal, Michigan, and UCLA does very very well.
Those three schools also did very well in London Times Rankings last year and its first year as well. But it seems like even the London Times is not past the politicization process unfortunately.
I never understood how universities like Northwestern, Brown, Emory do well in the US News rankings. They have like zero top ten ranked departments. |

What's up with people like you saying this drivel? Not everyone is here for the money.
I know a Cambridge grad (normally ranked 1 or 2 in the world) who came here last year. Why? Why not? Why not get a bit of life experience in a rarely explored Asian country. (compared to China, Japan or Thailand this place is pretty exotic for British folk)
The idea that people ONLY come here to pay their college debts is CRAP spewed by N.Americans (mostly Canadians) who can't get a job which will allow them to pay off their debts at home. Normal people who are out to 'discover themselves' or 'explore the world' - as a lot of Uni grads are - are discounted as freaks or plain unbelievable by people who've been forced here for economic reasons. Also, there's actually some people here who are fascinated by the country; hard as that is for cynics to believe.
I'm not criticizing people who are here to pay off their Uni debts, I'm criticizing people who claim that this is the ONLY reason to be here and that graduates of decent Universities should be in a 'real' job already.
People who graduated from prestigious Universities have just as much right to be here as anyone else. Don't knock them for it just because they're not paying off debts or because they've delayed getting a high paying job back home for a year or two. Chances are they know exactly what they're doing. |

i never knew that there was a stereotype that people go to korea to pay off their debts.
i HAVE heard that people go to teach english because they can't get a job back home, or they want something "easy"...if we're going to be talking about common stereotypes.
...don't really see any reason as to why you would be hating on people that have debts to pay back. it's not as if brits have no university debts. and regardless of whether the person is teaching english in korea or working at a bank in their home country, if they have debts then they will have to get a job to pay them back.
to be honest, i see a lot of recent grads in asia who are somewhat interested in paying back debt, but VERY interested in living in a foreign country so they can put that down on their resume back home, or in their statement of purpose for their grad school apps... |
