Yeah, he's a chimp for being honest. Get real. How many people teaching here do you think give a shit about teaching? How many ESL teachers here are actual teachers at all? Until Korea gives real teachers a reason to come here, they'll be few and far between.
Further, why should the "chimp" be respectful and courteous to people who are there putting on a show about what bastards we are? No thank you. I'm respectful to the people who deserve my respect, not some jackass sensationalist Korean "journalist" on the street. |

What salaries were they showing by the way? The usual jobs that offer the standard 2.0 or 2.2 shouldn't be that impressive. When I was making 2.0 in my first contract I had Koreans argue with me that I was definitely making more when they asked me. |
Salary asking questions? They are THE thing which has pissed me off most in Korea (and I'm an apologist):
I was in Yeosu and wanted to go to Suncheon but it was just before payday so I was poor and wanted to take the bus. I was taking a taxi to the bus terminal. The taxi driver asked where I worked. I told him "Yeosu University" he told me very good very good.
He then asked where I was going, and I told him Suncheon. He said he'd drive me there for $50. I said no thanks, the bus terminal please. He told me I earned 3 million a month because I worked at the University so I should take his taxi there. I told him I DIDN'T earn that much. He called me a liar and gave me a couple of "Aiiiish"ss I told him that, really, I earned 2.2m, not 3m. He started shouting at me that he KNEW that I was a liar, and a BAD MAN at that. Then he told me again to take the taxi to Suncheon. This is obviously the kind of behaviour one loves in the back of a cab..
Then he offered me a special discount. I could pay just 40,000won if he could pick up someone at the bus terminal who'd pay 10,000 won. I was not impressed. He couldn't understand why I'd be upset at paying 40k while another passenger paid 10k. He thought he was offering me an awesome deal.
He spent the rest of the distance calling me a cheap *beep*, a liar about my salary, and also a canny businessman if I took up his offer of just $40 if he could find a second to share a ride.
I eventually got out and paid my 4,000won fare at the bus stop.
That was my second worst cab ride. The worst was when on a $20 cab ride the 50ish yr old driver wanted to get a bottle of whiskey and go to a love motel with me ( no lie, really, really happened). |
You're a nicer person than me. If that had have been me (in any country) I would have called him an ignorant f*cking monkey, told him to go f*ck himself and left the cab without paying anything.

So we should act like they expect us to and play along with their pre-conceived notions? That's better? |

We've met the same guy. He sure gets around though. I was in his taxi in Anguk-dong, and again in Daejeon. |

They showed the type of jobs available for English Teachers and their salary ("look how much they earn, and they could be teaching your kids!!!!"). This was also supported by some chimp of an EFL Teacher who was caught off guard and asked why he works in Korea, he got his wallet out and shouted "What's this????", "It's cash. Why do you think people come to Korea? Because no other country pays more for English teachers!!!". He stormed off and didn't want to be filmed no more. I guess the chimp was having a bad day but I was embarrassed to see a fellow teacher treat Koreans with such distaste and contempt. |
Maybe he's fed up with Korean society, especially the media, treating foreigner teachers with contempt. |
He probably was just having a bad day... or week... or month... or life... Maybe he's been burned by his employer or an ex(Korean) and feeling extra spiteful. Understandable. But what he said and the manner in which he did it... lol. Man, that's bad. I can only imagine what it looked like.
Anyhow, trying to extinguish a fire by throwing gasoline at it is just some people's way of doing things.
I'm watching this right now(rather I'm 'streaming' it on my blazing 56k)
http://www.mongdori.com/forums/read.php?2,589 Is this the one you're talking about? |
Thanks for the link.
Watched it and told my co-worker that I had a bad morning because KBS made a really sensationalist and one sided docu about esl teachers, only interviewing and recording drunks in hongdae.
Mentioned about how the Korean university profs with fake degrees weren't punished but now they're makin a big fuss about foriegners with fake degrees.
This was all said in a level headed and non agressive manner.
She ignored me blatantly and a high level student listening laughed and said 'yes Korean people so bad!' at which my supposedly adult co-teacher burst and actually semi collapsed into fits of giggles and ignored me until I walked away.
This is one reason why I dislike Koreans sometimes.
This is just the kind of thing that makes an esl teacher that usually likes this place change his mind and say
F*ck em, take the cash and then get the f*ck out. |

If you are in Korea for any other reason than a self-serving one connected with money and teaching experience, for example 'culture', then I'm sorry but that's rather sad. Good money for such a straightforward job as teaching English in English is the best reason to be in Korea. Yes, there are other nice things, but would you stay if they slashed your salary in half? If the answer's "yes" then you sir are the saddest man alive.
Stop being intellectually dishonest. Yes, it was rude of the guy to 'flash his cash' if you will (he could have answered "money") but essentially his motivation for being in Korea is money and that's a very creditable, entirely normal position to take.
Go visit a temple or something, buddy. It goes all the way back to the 80s.
Being exploitative of Koreans - for the most mundane of products (my country's language) - is actually an image I'm happy to see promoted.

Compared to average Korean salaries, they are. The vast majority of Koreans earn less than NSETs. Our salaries in total are typical of households of 3 rather than single earners. |

I'd also like to add that if they think we are so scandalous for only being here for the money and some of us (gasp) go out drinking all night at weekends they should have interviewed the Head of the English Dept at the High School I worked at last year and my manager at the Elementary School I work at now.
The first guy used to come in either steaming drunk or hungover EVERY DAY. Students used to make the drinky drinky sign to me when he wasn't looking. He used to clap me on the back and tell me how much he loved drinking before classes and alsways wanted me to go out and drink with him. He was a waste of space in class and provided little support to this foriegn demon who actually wanted to teach a good class.
The second woman told me last week after a particularly difficult 'advanced class.'
"I don't really like this job or this classes students. I can never be myself or show my real mind. The best way to be happy in this job is to not show your real mind. Don't care if the studetns study well or they will think we are too strict. Just act nice and let them do what they want and you can have easier life. I don't care about this class."
Then they should interview me - the foriegn devil that ignored her advice, turned the class around, got them bringing notebooks, textbooks and (half of them - a marked improvement) homework to each advanced class and actually listen and do work instead of fight each other and make a load of noise and insult me and my co-teacher.
Put that on SBS you moron journalists.
I should submit these stories to The Korean Herald or something.
I would if I had even one single iota of faith hey would be well recieved or taken notice of....

Just so you guys know. The video on mongdori is an older one and
does not feature a pedophile. It was the video with the teacher busted for
marijuana and private teaching.
I talked to the Mongdori site admin. and they will rip and post the new video sometime within the next couple of days.
Cheers. |

That's a little redudant, at this point. I'm continuously impressed by how low the bar is (if there is one at all) for journalists. Facts. objectivity and a sense of duty to the public are sorely lacking. K-Journalists are only a very small step down from, for example, US journalists. I'm hoping the whole public backlash against Bush gets these scumbags to start acting more responsible... but I'm not holding my breath. |

Block a site that was instrumental in getting a wanted pedophile caught? Makes perfect sense. |

THANK GOD he did this... what the hell do you want? Some made up, good for arirang crap about how he's "here to experience a truly unique, wonderful society... to further immerse himself in the jung that no westerner can understand... to be witness to the only country with four glorious seasons... the be witness to the miracle of the han river".
Cry me a river. So the guy told the reporters exactly why MOST esl-ers are in Korea... THE CASH!. It's about time Koreans got a wake up call. |
