I would suggest Boston. My wife and I spent a few weeks there two years ago. They have a great subway system, bus tours etc. We could have spent another month and not seen it all. This is where America started, from the Pilgrims, Salem Witch Trials, Boston Tea Party, Ben Franklin, Paul Revere, Harvard, M.I.T., The Red Sox, and of course Mr. Romney. :) , Waldon's Pond, House of Seven Gables, Cap Cod, Martha's Vineyard and on and on......And the locals are friendly!

Have a great time.

Here's a airpass website I found. It does warn you that some
discount airlines may be cheaper.

Keep in mind that to get the best airfares you need to get your
ticket early. The US system doesn't work exactly like other countries.

The US is a big country so it's possible you could spend all of your
time traveling if you aren't careful.

If you are going to be in the US for a long time you could buy a car.
Years ago I helped a pair of brothers from Belgium get insurance on
a car they bought for $500. They drove it from Kansas to Texas and then
through all the Gulf states to Florida.

Here's your chance to learn to drive.

Yahoo has a cheap travel type thing called Travelzoo. They send out weekly updates on what airlines and hotels have reduced prices. Usually it's last minute things, but they'll have boutique hotels in major cities and airfare cross country. Some international stuff, too.

Another poster suggested a week in Chicago. You could do it in 4 days, especially if you're spending a lot of time in New York. Nightlife, museums, shopping will all be the same, probably better in New York. All of the things that are unique to Chicago can be done pretty quickly. Having said that, do not skip Chicago. I love Chicago just before Thanksgiving, too, it's my favorite place to be at that time of year.

Amtrak has a lot of routes that go through national parks out west. I watched an entire travel show on it once. It looked amazing, but I'm guessing Novemeber to December would be the absolute worst time to train it up in most national parks. Just too cold.

Good luck!!

For just a month it would probably be best to focus on an area of the US you would like to see rather than biting off more than you can chew and trying to go cross country. Maybe start in DC and move north using a combination of trains and buses or planes through Philly, NY and Boston. You could even go up to Montreal (pluggin my hometown!). Philly isn't that great, but its a nice stop between DC and New York.

Or go the other way. Start in Boston and then go out in the country for some fall foilage. I'm not sure if mid-November is too late for that, though. I just think it'd be a shame to go all the way to the US and not take in the natural wonders as well as the cities.

Or, for better weather (still not beach weather, though) you could focus on California/Nevada/Arizona. San Diego-LA-Vegas-Grand Canyon-Yosemite-SF.

Or you could hire me to drive you around. My rates are pretty reasonable and I'm excellent company!

Checkout www.Motel6.com for cheap hotels. They have rates for two double beds for $30us in the winter and around $50us in the summer. The rooms are ussually really clean and good for budget travel. Also, I have found that food is cheap in the US and gas is too. Smile Train service is lacking, like someone said earlier.... Sad

Austin TX isn't cheap, but it's worth it. Live music out the ass and a good vibe.

Hi - buses in the US are harsh places, there are lots of distressed poor people
on them.

The Green Tortoise is a good bargain. They have hostels and bus tours. Look into car rentals.

just my thoughts. I drove cross country twice now. Don't do amtrak and don't do Greyhound. You might want to rent a car with unlimited miles.

I started in Philly, just south of NYC, then went to Charleston, SC, then Savanna, GA, then Fort Lauderdale, Miami, drove to Key West from Miami which is a must do!!! Then went to New Orleans (Ilived there for two years, and there's no place like it.) Then from there go to maybe Austin Texas, then New Mexico, Arizona, San Diego, maybe drive 15 minutes down south to Tijuana Mexico, if you like seedy places, but don't be there after dark. Then drive up to LA(Vencie Beach, Malibu, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Hollywood, West Hollywood..etc.) then go up to San Fran, maybe Santa Barbara, Seattle, and maybe drive up to Vancover, Canada, Then come back down and hit places in Colorodo, and don't forget VEGAS! I hear Jackson Hole, Wyoming is a must too.

You may want to do ARizona after Texas, look at a map and find what route you'd like to take/

Sum it up: Hit NYC, Miami, Key West, New Orleans, Austin, San Diego, LA, San Fran and VEGAS!

I've never been north of NYC, like Vermont and Mass, but hear is awesome!

There are hostels everywhere in USA, hostelworld.com just to name one, and the ones in San Diego are literally, right on the beach! If you don't want hostels then check out priceline.com for hotels, its usually reliable.

The problem with greyhound is the waitng stations are one of the scariest places on earth and then they drop you off in the worst part of towns usually, not everywhere, but most places.

i'd agree with other posters on discount airlines. trains are great in the northeast, but distances are huge in other parts of the country.

others have mentioned green tortoise, but nobody has mentioned their hostel in seattle yet. i stayed in the green tortoise seattle for a few days, and it was awesome. stone's throw from pike place market, and just a fun environment overall. on friday, it's free keg night. plus, it's like $20 a night - i paid more for parking when i stayed there than i did for accommodations.

lots of people mention miami or florida. i assume you have seen old people, trashy people, pre-fab architecture, and cockroaches before. i'd give it a miss. if you've been to costa del sol in spain, you've been to florida.

others have mentioned it and i have to be a homer here too - don't miss chicago. great sports town, great bar town, and in my opinion the best food and architecture in the country. plus, there's a huge, fairly new hostel downtown next to the el.

oh, and don't take the greyhound. it is as awful as you've heard, and the stations really are in the worst part of every city.
