This is usually rivalry week, but because of the schedule, some games were played last Saturday. So, college football fans, what do think are the best rivalries out there?
I start with Alabama-Auburn (After I called a radio show down there about them taking their football a little too seriously one of the radio announcers advised me not to come down there.)
Michigan-Ohio State Woody Hayes (former Ohio State coach) ran out of gas in Michigan near the Ohio-Michigan border and refused to buy gas until he was over state line into Ohio.
I also like Harvard-Yale (played last week), Georgia-Florida (played too early every year) Mississippi State-Mississippi, (both teams have been good in different years and I see them both moving forward, Washington State-Washington because of the only major geography difference in the Pac-10, and Texas-Oklahoma, especially if they would alternate home games instead of playing in Dallas every year.
We'll see what happens this weekend. I think it will be LSU against Missouri in the BCS championship. |

the best rivalry game is this weekend, and for the first time ever it matters nationally: kansas-missouri. oldest rivalry west of the mississippi, 2 teams and states that despise each other. osu-mich don't like each other, but their states were never at war. scumbag missourian pro-slavery twits came into my town (home of KU) twice and burned the town to the ground shortly before the civil war started. and this year, it's number 2 vs number 3 at a neutral field (arrowhead stadium in kansas city) which means, unlike in most meetings between these rivals, beer will be sold.

First and foremost, you've neglected to mention the most significant game of the week...
...which also happens to be a very bitter, yet under-publicized rivalry (due to the usual relative mediocrity), known as the "Border War". That would be Missouri vs. Kansas...the longest uninterrupted series west of the Mississippi River. .... Anyway, the winner goes on to the Big12 title game and presumably takes the no.2 BCS ranking, currently held by KU (UM is no.3). It's the biggest conference game of the season, and one of the most unlikely matchups at such a high payoff/cost in the last few decades of college football. Personally, I don't care who wins, but I will predict a result of Kansas 20 Missouri 17.
Texas-Texas A&M is always a good game. Last year, the Aggies denied UT a spot in the Big12 championship game...in Austin. (That blew. *beep* them in their goat-asses. I'm a UT alum.) Texas 31 TAMU 10
Virginia Tech-Virginia is hopefully going to be a great game, and this year so much is on the line. The winner will go to the ACC championship game. If VT loses, they can count on not being an at-large BCS selection. Virginia 19 VT 17
LSU-Arkansas is a huge rivalry (I think it's called the "Golden Boot"...sheeit...maybe it's sister.). With the Tigers at no.1 at the moment, the Razorbacks will have a huger than usual motivation to win. Darren McFadden is still a stud, even if the rest of his team has struggled to support him in the SEC. Unfortunately for Ark., the game is in Baton Rouge. LSU 42 Arkansas 24
Nebraska-Colorado, though not a high-prifile game due to their relative mediocrity this year, tends to be a good matchup. This year, it'll decide which team ends up bowl-eligible. Colorado 14 Nebraska 10
I guess I'll throw in the Georgia-Georgia Tech game. That's pretty bitter, as I'm told. It has no implications on the SEC East picture, though. Georgia 16 GT 13
And let's not forget North Carolina-Duke...especially since I'm from Chapel Hill. Both teams are crap and deserve to be shot by firing squad. UNC 6 Duke 3
Other good, non-rivalry games would obviously include Conn vs. WVU and Boise St. vs. Hawaii. If Hawaii loses, despite what some of the sportswriters say, I can't see BSU getting even the tiniest BCS consideration.
I guess there's a chance that Kentucky could beat Tenn. at home, though their season took a particularly awful turn since the LSU victory.
Oregon's already out of the picture, so wtf cares who wins vs. USC. I'm going to root for the Ducks out of consideration for my oblivious Oregonian coworker and because I'm glad to see the Trojans having an off-year.
I definitely hope to see Notre Dame lose again, hopefully by a large margin.
It's been a season for the ages not to watch live, as a huge college football fan. Curses!

a) Why did you bother if you haven't any vested interest? b) It is a big deal, even if both teams are crap. c) That was trolling via radio.

Huh? So what? I guess you're a Michigan fan? Sucks for you...
Not only that, but who cares? That was last week.

Gee, is it just me, or did you propose discussing future games (i.e., this week)? ...not only that, but HU vs. Yale? Nobody cares about that but alumni of the respective universities. I know Koreans that could kick the shit out of both of them.
...All in all, I find the OP to be mediocre, as well. |

Egg Bowl = MSU vs Ole Miss
I think rivalrys change year to year. I think this weeks biggest game will be Mizzou at Rock Chalk Jayhawk, mostly because of the implications. |

My prediction is LSU to win out and face Ohio State in the NC game.
LSU beats Arkansas, advances to the SEC title game...
Kansas beats Missouri, advances to the Big12 title game...
West Virginia beats Connecticut, but not convincingly...
Oklahoma beats Oklahoma State...
Tennessee beats Kentucky...
...
LSU beats Tennessee to win the SEC and remain undefeated...
Oklahoma beats Kansas, knocking them out of consideration for the title game...
Then OSU leapfrogs WVU in the computers and otherwise, by virtue of the fact that they played in a tougher conference, their reputation and that everyone remembers how they blew out damn near everybody but Illinois (to whom they lost). WVU plays in a BCS game, which is about all the Big East champ deserves, IMHO, without going undefeated.
Who wins there, I haven't yet formed an opinion...

I think OSU would get embarrassed in the NC game, again..if they went.
LSU vs KU. LSU dominates with more or less home field advantage. 35-14. |

I still think the odds of KU or UM beating whichever Big12 South opponent are low. |

Hey, Whatever, you need to read posts more carefully.
I was only asking what people thought the best rivalries were.
I wasn't radio trolling, as you suggest. I love college football, especially my WSU Cougars. I make it a habit to listen to sports radio on a station in the city where the Cougars are playing the night before the game. In my case, they were playing Auburn last year to open the season, and some of the things the hosts and other callers into the show said about Sylvester Croom, USC, and my team irked me. So yes, I did had an interest.
As far as Michigan-Ohio State: I do think it is a great rivalry, but I couldn't care less who wins. The Pac-10 wins the Rose Bowl most of the time anyhow (except, of course, when WSU plays)
I also noted that because of the calendar, many rivalry games had already been played. (Historically, most rivalry games are played the week before Thanksgiving weekend).
Finally, another great rivalrly is your school (Texas vs. Oklahoma), but it could become better if the games alternated between Austin and Norman.
Final Score: Missouri 31 Kansas 19 |

Although it almost never has national ramifications...it's hard to find more bitter blood than that between Clemson and South Carolina. And it's not just football. It doesn't matter if it's women's volleyball or baseball (one of the best natiional rivalries!), a loss to Clemson can nilify almost any other successes. |

(a) Fair enough.
(b) Yes, you were. Calling a radio station to ask why Auburn and Alabama care so much about their football rivalry is one of two things: stupid or trolling.
(c) ...Any why is that? Do you hear anybody suggesting Florida and Georgia, Army and Navy, etc. play home-and-away?
...And just for posterity, (d) What? Washington State, USC, Sylvester Croom, Alabama...I fail to see the pattern. It's kind of like saying, "Fork, window, yellow, armadillo"... |

Okay, Whatever, let's go step by step
I didn't intend for this to be a debate about best overall rivalries or calling into radio stations, but since you seem to need an explanation, here it is.
(For those of you who don't care about college football, my apologies.)
A. Washington State was playing Auburn last year, and since I'm alum of WSU I did have an interest. As I posted before, I listen to sports radio, especially from the opposing team's station the night/afternoon before the game to find out what the opposing team's fans think.
B. In 1978, both Alabama and USC lost one game. Alabama's one loss was to USC. However, the AP decided that Alabama was the champ, while the UPI (coaches poll at that time) decided USC should be the champ. (oh how I long for those days of a non-disputed champ) Anyhow,
the radio hosts on that station were still complaining, nearly 30 years later, how "Bama got ripped off." That was when I called and voiced my opinion about them taking college football a little too seriously.
C. As for rivalries being played on campus: This year, the Missouri Kansas game was moved off campus for the first time since the 1940s; Alabama-Auburn was played in Birmingham until nine years ago, when both universities decided to move it back to their respective campuses. Navy-Army has it's history based on Philadelphia being the easiest for both teams to travel to. (Started in 1899)
D. Florida-Georgia is a great rivalry. Wouldn't move the site. BUT IT DOESN'T OCCUR DURING RIVALRY WEEK!
E. Ask Gamecock if he'd rather have South Carolina-Clemson in Charlston every year or a rotation between Columbia and Clemson? Or Missihippi if the "Egg Bowl" should be held in Jackson each year instead of Starksville or Oxford. Or how about you. Would you rather see UT and Texas A&M in Dallas every year, or would you like to see the game played
every year at a neutral site?
Because of the home campus advanatage this year, I'm going:
Texas A&M 32 Texas 13 |

best rivalries are:
1) OSU-Mich, simply the hardest hitting game out there and the most intense i've seen
2) Army-Navy, maybe 40 years ago this would be #1 but the quality of play at the academies
3) Alabama-Auburn- the iron bowl the intensity is almost on level with OSU-Mich
4) ND-USC; best intersectional rivalry
5) UT-A&M, my wife went to UT and its one of 2 games she cares about
6) UT-OU yeah its played in dallas but thats part of the charm |
