I sent a package with all my documents that weighed less than 2 lbs to Korea and was literally robbed by FedEx for $113! My recruiter had insisted on using FedEx and I was stupid enough to oblige. I'm not at home so transportation is a problem so I didn't compare. I should have checked. I could have bought shoes with that money! Bah, my bad.

Anyway, I thought to send a public notice to my fellow noobs. Use USPS and save $$$ even if they urge you to use FedEx. (USPS quote was only $35!)

And don't use DHL, who will open ALL documents/letters up to look at them. Yes, including the sealed transcripts for Immigration.

Everyone should do themselves a favor and just use their local postal system's Priority Post / EMS (express mail service).

Post office to door. Trackable, tracable, just as fast as DHL / FEDEX / UPS and about 25% of the cost.

and for those in the UK, use royal mail, ask for international signed for. Costs about 5 or 6 max and arrives within 7days.

So long as theres not another postal strike all should be good!

Ummm...my understanding, at least if you're in the states, is that opening a piece of mail that is destined for someone else is a *beeping* felony. I highly doubt that DHL is opening sealed transcripts.... I just sent (2 weeks ago) my 'immigration package' to SK from SouthEast U.S.A via DHL, including sealed transcripts, and I have gotten confirmation from my school that the immy office is accepting the documents I sent....so I'm pretty damn sure that DHL didn't open my transcripts. If you have had an experience with DHL opening yours...if you sent from the U.S.....get some representation, because that *beep* is crazy. Mine was $65, took 2 full days.

Use the post office. They are being very selfish when they ask you to use one of the shippers. It is not neccessary and in the case of DHL, the service is terrible. The priority mail service is a great way to ship and it is reliable and cheap. Don't listen to these schools and recruiters. You can ship something ANYWAY you want.

Things that are sent by delivery service (FEDEX, UPS, DHL, etc) are NOT considered to be "MAIL" and are NOT given the same protections as mail under federal law.

The ONLY service that is LEGALLY allowed to carry "MAIL" is the post office - a government monopoly.

The rest are simply "document delivery" services and you are NOT protected under current laws.
