I have stayed at The Golden Palace in Sukhumvit a couple times and it's a good bargain. It's inexpensive and relaxing to get a traditional Thai massage everyday. Instead of washing your own hair, you can have the girls at one of the salons do it for you for you for less than a 100 Baht. Food is great! Eat some insects and wash them down with some beer. Bangkok is great for three or four days then it's nice to get out of all the polution and traffic.
I love the massage school at Wat Pho, really worth a visit. Another good party place with less people and great diving is Koh Samui.
Have fun! |

Go check out Kanchanaburi. It's only an hour or so from Bangkok by bus. It's beautiful, quiet and very cheap. I found my favorite guest house there for the cheapest price.
We rented motorbikes and drove up to the national park. There's a little hike up a river and you can see 7 different layers of waterfalls. They're magnificent. |

If your ;ooking for places in Bangkok, there's this little alley near Siam Square called Soi Kasem San 1. It's got a bunch of mid range hotels, and is right on both skytrain routes and a canal to the old city. It's the next alley up from Jim Thompson's house. I highly recomend it. |

There was a particular convention that just ended a few weeks ago (the acronyms escape me). But most importantly, are they lifting the 2am bar closing enforcements now? |

Although they really clamped down during the APEC summit the 2am curfew is is a seperate law that was designed by the law and order prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra to bring morality back to Thailand. Sure you can still go pay for a woman and drink on the streets 24/7 but stay out of the bars! |

I've been in a number of bars at 2am when the police have come through ordering everything shut, I have also been told that we can stay as long as the stereo is off and the lights are dimmed, bribery I imagine. But since alcohol can be sold all hours you will probably be able to find some local barflys to guide you to a "restaurant" that is allowed to serve because they are primarily selling eats. Those can be a good place to hang. The best ones are the sidewalk places. Enjoy your time. |

I've been in Bangkok, Phuket and Ko Samui when the cops have come into a bar and looked around and then walked out. Then they walk down the street and force a bar to close for no apparent reason.
The Ex- Pats tell me that those are the bars that haven't paid their "money" yet this month.
That's the difference, it seems. |
