Quote:
WHITE BIRD

White Bird
In a golden cage
On a winter's day
In the rain
White bird
In a golden cage
Alone

The leaves blow
Cross the long black road
To the darkened skies
In its rage
But the white bird
Just sits in her cage
Unknown.

White bird must fly
Or she will die

White bird
Dreams of the aspen tree
With their dying leaves
Turning gold
But the white bird
Just sits in her cage
Growing old.

White bird must fly
Or she will die
White bird must fly
Or she will die

The sunsets come
The sunsets go
The clouds Float by
And The Earth Turns slow
And the Young Birds Eyes
Do always Glow
And She must fly
She must fly
She must fly

White bird
In a golden cage
On a winter's day
In the rain
White bird
In a golden cage
Alone

White bird must fly
Or she will die
White bird must fly
Or she will die
White bird must fly
Or she will die
White bird must fly

If you're olde, you'll recogonize it as a one hit wonder from 1969 and a great station change inducer. Other that that, its a song about being about how special it is to be White and teaching in Korea.

Interesting, I'd always thought if this song hinted at white supremacy or something like that. Does it?

Actually I think the same could be said of most foreigners here no matter what color they are.

In '69 it would have been very special to be teaching in Korea.
Especially since it would have meant you didn't end up in Vietnam
where "Waygook"would have also had very special and dear meaning.

The Incredible String Band
White Bird

Who among you has not laid his head
beneath some holy awning
Would think that such a night of tortured travelling
Could bring such a glory morning
And feel his heart sucked to his head
His head so wide that all life says
Has room to live and breathe and have its being - and more
For such a scene of beauty
For such a scene of beauty
encompasses

See the white bird on the water
In beauty calm and still

White bird, white bird, white bird
Of the morning
White bird, white bird,

White bird, white bird, white bird
Of the morning
White bird, white bird,

See he watches the white bird
of the morning
White bird, white bird,

See he watches the white bird
of the morning
White bird, white bird,

Warm in his ecstasy
A shimmering gentle backward fall
He leaves his body there so small and mirror black against the sun
With deities for strength
He sees his body wracked with pain
And hears his voice so stained with sadness deep
It asks the day to weep away

Loved her so strong now
She is gone
My heart will break for ever

Sun and moon change around
Me the games seem so strange

Walk in the light
I shall never
Walk in the light
I will never
White bird, white bird, white bird
Of the morning
White bird, white bird,

White bird, white bird, white bird
Of the morning
White bird, white bird,

White bird, white bird, white bird
Of the morning
White bird, white bird,

White bird, white bird, white bird
Of the morning
White bird, white bird,

Speak to me with your beauty
oh white bird of the morning
Oh he cried Oh he cried
But stopped
short
Seeing not water but ice
death not life
dead white bird dead white bird

Walking onward every day
Sunshine in our faces

Sun knows what goes on below
But still our faces graces
No disgraces
No distastes
Nothing wasted at all

White bird, white bird, white bird
Of the morning
White bird, white bird

I see so many white birds they no longer have any poetic or symbolic significance and are often too much of a cliche'.

In Florida they're everywhere, and over here in Asia too, similar to referring to a 'white bird'-so special in meaning-being your typical city pigeon.

Besides, they're not birds if they're white. They're herons. Such musicans who use this symbol as a metaphor of freedom or whatever, therefore, are those from the free-love culture who's understanding of things artistic were drug-induced, for the most part, and sloppy art to say the least.

No doubt. I prefer my art squeaky clean and non-drug-induced (including coffee, alcohol, prescription meds, and most herbal teas), with metaphors that are 100% accurate with no room for any other interpretation. Smile

So, all white birds are herons? Even if true, aren't herons also birds?

'white bird' = 'white dove of peace'...it was an anti-war anthem of the time
