Damn. Too bad the cops didn't have one of those stronger water cannons mounted on the top of a vehicle. |

no $hit. Use of leathal force seems like a no brainer in this situation. Is it a cultural thing that protesters are allowed to get away with so much? |

I have been right in the middle of a milder protest a year ago. The police remained calm, while the protesters where trying to hurt them. I hjave several situations like that in Seoul, so if they claim police are using too much force, my experiance tell me different. |

I like how the commanding officer and the protestors leader had a good old ajeossi face-saving meeting to decide that that that was enough rioting for one day! Very Korean.
I think at least rubber bullets or CS gas could have been used. Live ammunition? Are you nuts? They did that at Kwangju once and look how that turned out. |

Yeh, like a boxing match they shake hands and embrace each other physically and verbally at the end.
A lot of protests do end in bloodshed these days and the police here should have at least used rubber bullets to keep fire at bay as some of their members were badly burnt. Flamethrowers would easily penetrate riot gear. |

Probably because they don't want to accidentally hit the propane tank and blow it up. Also if the Korean cops start using guns on the protestors, it's only going to escalate into more violence. |

I got caught in the middle of a somewhat violent protest once near Chonggak. Because protesters were blocking the streets and preventing traffic from passing through, the riot police moved in and started to try to clear them out. The police were beating their batons against their shields ala Shaka Zulu. Soon the protesters started throwing rocks and bricks. Thought some of the riot police were wrong to pick up the rocks and throw them back--showed, to me, a lack of discipline. Granted, police officers should be allowed to protect themselves, however, I felt that the shield beating only encouraged the protesters to resort to rock throwing instead of keeping the peace. |
