I want to get a poll going to see what everyone here is drinking. What beer do you like the best here in Korea?

I don't much like the Korean beer. It's got a watery, tasteless quality to it, and gives me wicked hangovers. I was drinking Prime Max for a time, then switched to Cafri, but then after getting into a Home Plus and seeing all the imports, I've never looked back.

My favorite beers that I've found here in Korea are San Miguel (Philippines) and Tiger (Singapore), but they can be expensive. I'm drinking Miller Genuine Draft now, which is imported from the States. I'd love to find some Singha (Thailand), but haven't seen any.

On a side note, I tried drinking Bud here in Korea for a few weeks, but it just tasted different from back home. You can't beat the price (about 1090won/bottle), but it's made here in Korea, which might have something to do with the taste. It's made by OB (the bottle is an OB bottle anyway).

Avoid plastic bottles and go with glass bottles or draft at a bar. I found there is a huge beer quality difference between glass and plastic bottles with draft being the best. Cans are not all that great, but better than plastic.

I drink the silver label Hite beer in glass bottles and sometimes drink Budweiser in tiny brown glass bottles, but find that Hite draft at the bar is about the best it gets minus those way overpriced and limited selection foreign bottled beers.

Stout is good shiat but it can get boring. If I have to buy beer in bulk I go for Max but Stout bottles would be my first choice for Korean stuff.

used to love picking up oettinger at e-mart. looks that era's over. might still have it at homeplus, but jamsil is a bit too far to travel to buy beer that i'll easily drink in less than a week (if beer's in the house, it gets drunk quickly)

For Korean beers, Max for me, in glass bottles. Wish they had it on draft.

I voted imports as that's what i drink when in Hongdae, Itaewon or La Festa. I'll go for a nice Corona for a clear, crisp, refreshing beer that still retains potency. The Kilkenny on tap in the Wolfhound is fantastic btw.... and some of the bars in Itaewon do a nice pint of Erdinger.

I will never again drink Guiness on tap in Korea as the disspointment that comes with the disparity between expectation and reality plunges me almost into the deepest bowels of dispair. Lord knows how the Irish in Korea deal with this. It is an actual fact that the further guiness travels from the brewery in Ireland or the further away from Ireland it is brewed and kegged - the worse it becomes.

Cass / OB / Hite is disgusting rubbish. I can barely get it down inside my body and when I do I feel overly full, bloated and hugely dissapointed.

I will stick up for Cass Red though. A nice potent brew (got a suprisingly strong heady buzz after two SMALL cans) and it actually has an ok, well rounded and full flavour and doesn't have that horrid watery texture and metallic taste that the other korean lagers have. And a fab price. So I drink that if hanging out in the local area or if I fancy a beer at home before bed.

Wabars have a tolerable dark beer on tap. It's called Dunkell (둔켈)

It's no guiness but it beats the snot out of cass or hite.

Lately I've been buying Crown Royal and Diet Coke, but when I'm in the mood for beer, I go for Miller Lite---Less filling / Tastes great!

Cass Ice Light isn't a bad substitute in a pinch.

What IS up with Korean beers and the merciless hangover that follows?

In Korea, the hangovers I suffer are WAY out of proportion to the amount that I drink the night before. We're talking tequila-like hangovers (headache, nausea, dizziness, disorientation, nervousness) on 5 beers????

Anybody else have this problem?

And yes, I employ all the hangover-prevention methods. Tons of water, full stomach, plenty of sleep, etc....

But even after all of that, every time I drink Korean beers I still feel like dogshit the next day.

Lately it doesn't even seem worth drinking at all.

One observation: I've noticed the draft beer hangover is far worse than the bottle beer hangover.

Korean beer makes my stomach feel strange the next day. If I have to I drink Max but these days I drink soju. It tastes better than the majority of beer here.
