I just came across these today. They are fake letters in the reading section of lesson 10 in a second year middle school English textbook.

Koreans are very proud of their language. Their language is called Korean. Written Korean is called Hangeul. It was invented in 1443 by King Sejong. He loved his people very much and he invented the written language for them. He is loved by all Koreans. Hangeul is very easy to read and write. So almost every Korean can read and write. In some countries people cannot read or write because their written language is too difficult. That's not true in Korea.

My father says that Koreans are one of the hardest working peoples in the world. And I think it's true. I live in Dallas, and I have some friends from Korea in my neighborhood. Their parents work very hard. They usually start their work early in the morning and come back home late at night. And they do their best for their children to have a better education. They know what's important in life.


Grammar-wise, starting sentences with conjunctions drives me bonkers and I discourage it as often as possible yet run into MANY examples of And, So, But, Because sentences in texts (yes I know it's ok to do it sometimes, at least with because).

Any reactions to the content? I'm not touching it with a ten-foot pole.

Content is a huge problem as the nationalism here is driven up to near-Kristalnacht proportions at times. I started another thread on elementary social studies curriculum in which I repeated what was stated to me by a friend's daughter; namely that they were taught about how Korea would become a great and famous country in the future. I find it a tad worrying that there is no balance and critical perspective, if what she reported is actually true.
