Wishmaster, you are correct about the costs. The average stay of a newbie to Hawaii is around 1 year. Unless you are a professional (hotel manager, doctor, lawyer, etc.), work construction or wait tables at a good restaurant, it's hard to make good money.

Other problems with Hawaii: Racism, the equivalent of Hawaiian-rednecks, the meth problem and theft.

I don't know, racism, Hawaiian rednecks, meth and theft? Where do you hang out? Okay, if you get your place in the middle of Kalihi or in the depths of Palolo Valley, sure... but most of Oahu is pretty good.

"strictly academic" you say? contact your school and see what kind of accomodations they have. with a UH program? they might have cheap dorms for you. also, next to the university (behind the YWCA) is a great little hostel. the hostels in waikiki are terrifyingly skanky.

What are people's impressions of Ewa Beach or Ewa Plains area? Looks like the real estate (while still insanely expensive) isn't so bad compared to Honolulu.

What are people's takes on that area? Also, is Waipahu just not considered as a potential place? Many on other sites seem to refer it to the ghetto of Hawaii. But it isn't really that ghetto that I noticed while driving around there in the past. Yet it has the reputation of it.
