Not counting internal wars on the penninsula... have they won a war?

I don't know much Korean history before the Korean War and Japanese Occupation. I cannot think off the top of my head a single time Korea has won a war.

Would that make Korea the only country in East Asia never to have won its own war?

Didn't they win the Imjin War in which they repelled the Japanese? It was all down hill from there though.

Yeah, I would count the Imjin War.

Plus there were were a lot of internal wars if you want to include those.

Okay, they did win a war once then. They repelled the Japanese. That's what I was wondering.

America won a war recently in Afghanistan against the Taliban. American won a war in Iraq against Sadam's regime. While the peacekeeping part isn't over. I would consider both of those victories.

America did not iwn in Vietnam or Korea, no.

If you are a peaceful people, like someone asserted Koreans claimed to be. You should be a lot more polite to those around you that are foreign. Lest you find yourselves conquered.

Define 'winning'.

I'm reminded of 'Catch-22' where an old Italian guy (Nately's **beep*'s father?) says Italy has won all its wars by surrendering. Eventually all the foreigners go away and the Italians are left just where they were, busy being Italians. A lot like Korea.

There was also the Goguryeo-Sui Wars between 598 and 614, where you could easily argue a Korean kingdom came out on top and the Chinese Sui dynasty fell apart. The Korean commander, Eulji, killed over 300 000 Chinese soldiers at the Battle of Salsu by opening a dam.

War is hardly over in Afghanistan. The Afghan government controls maybe one city. As for Iraq, do you mean Iraq I or Iraq II? Iraq II ain't over yet. But, I may give you Iraq I, but that was more like a squirmish.

Iraq 1 was chasing them out of Kuwait, giving them a big scare, and bombing them back to the Stone Age. Iraq 2 is an occupation war, and the war isn't over until the occupation succeeds (like it did in the Philippines) or fails (like it did in Vietnam).

Imjin War:
I think we can say that Joseon dynasty won the sea war against the Japanese invaders, but it couldn't defeat the Japanese on land without a considerable help coming from Ming China. Ming's help in form of men and resources is one of the many reasons why Ming dynasty fell "soon" after the Imjin War was over.

Stupid thread, and totally irrelevant. Does wining a war make any country, or group of people better or worse than another.
If you feel like taking the Mickey out of Korea, at least have the intelligence to address real issues, and not garbage like this.
Some here, including yours truely take the piss out of Koreans for often being foolish, threads like this make us look even dumber.

The Japanese invaded Korea, but the invasion was [i]repelled[i]. Hence, Korea won that war by winning at sea. If Korea had lost, the Japanese colonial period would've begun in the late 16th century.

Or maybe "enlisting powerful allies" can be regarded as winning by use of strategy.

What did he do after he fought against the Japanese? I've never heard of him.
