This afternoon, I was at one of my middle schools. Sat in the teaching room, doing a bit of lesson planning for tomorrow. Then in come two policemen. They want to have a talk to me. One guy, who's english was actually quite good (a bit too good for a city with only 25 000 people in it) asked me if I would teach him English as extra classes. I said "No I can't, it's illegal". He suggested that he would pay me to teach him. I still maintained that it was illegal and the only way is that if my Office of Education gives him the thumbs up, but still maintained that I can't otherwise. "I like living in Korea and wouldn't jeopardise that." After about four minutes they leave. This all left me confused. I have a bit of an idea why, but was wondering what thoughts you had on this???

another perplexing story. Perhaps its the obvious. They just had extra time and were looking for someone to convict.

I thought it was a bit bold to do it in the teachers room. Especially because I'm sure it's illegal for Korean teachers to accept extra work and get paid for it. The town that this school is in only has 300 people, we're talking small. This guys english was way too good. He even used the word "therefore" in the correct position of the sentence.

My keen sense of smell, perfected as a chef, could detect a vague 2 hour old hint of Soju on his breath. Liquid lunch?

I told my co-teacher who explained it to the VP. I left to go home shortly after so no idea what they thought. I only teach there once a week, all day. So probably won't find out until next Tuesday. Strange if it was some kind of test. Will check with the other native teachers here in my city tonight (6 of us) and see if they got a similar visit.

None of my co-tchrs can do that. Why didn't you recruit him to become a teacher? It's not like he's doing anything worthwhile in this country as a cop. Smile

Nope, one of the many small towns in Korea called Seobu.

Going for Korean lessons now with some other native teachers so will check and see if they got the same. Will post later if anything new.

I'm guessing he honestly had no idea you couldnt legally teach him privately. Regular cops have minimal connection with immigration. Most Koreans in my experience have no idea what our visa limitations are.

IN THAT CASE:

We have two scenarios:

SCENARIO ONE

2 hours before:

Two frustrated cops out drinking some soju at Family mart:

Cop 1: Hey, you know, I sure wish I could perfect my English. My French is great, so is my German, but my English needs work.

Cop 2: No kidding. Hey, I know what you mean. English is an international language. Hey, I think I can help you out, there is a middle school near here, with a kind looking foreign teacher.... lets ask him if you can get private lessons.

Cop 1: Righty oh mate. Lets go, tally ho.

COPS leave, two hours later go to middle school.

OR........

Two frustrated cops out drinking some soju at Family mart:

COP 1: These *beep* foreign teachers are getting out of hand.

COP 2: One shot. Assssssssssssssssssh. yeah, I saw one with a hot
girl last night.

COP 1: I wish they would leave Korea.

COP 2: One shot. Assssssssssssssssssh. Yeah, me too, they are bad for Korea... hey, I know this white kid who teaches near here, lets go have some FUN and get him arrested.

COP 1: Nay, One shot! Asssssssssssssssssssssssssssh.

COPS laugh as they leave family mart and steal a pack of dried squid on the way out.

I checked with the other native teachers here and no-one else got the visit. A couple of the uni professors thought it sounded just too random to be a policeman legitimately asking for extras, at a school I only teach at on tuesdays, in a tiny village. So will put it down to a failed attempt to set me up. Strange. But will post again if he just so happens to pop up next week as well. What would you actually teach to a policeman. Third conditional? If you hadn't have thrown that molotov cocktail, you wouldn't be in jail.

Laughing

Modal verbs would be handy too.Koreans sound too harsh in using them.

I also talked to a policeman today. Unfortunately, it was because he caught me doing an illegal U-Turn. No idea what will happen about it. At the end he said "Be careful driver", before which he was just laughing most of the time.
