For the last few months I've been looking for a good (non-hagwon) job and have had limited success. My top choice is SMOE and today I was just asked when I would be available for a face-to-face interview. However, my second choice, a university job outside of Seoul, has set up an interview later this week and I was told by my inside guy at the uni. they will offer me a job at the interview.

As I said, the uni. is my second choice so I was wondering if anyone could help me figure some things out. First, assuming I interview in early Dec., what are the odds I will be offered a job with SMOE and about how long will it take me to find out? Second, is it foolish of me to pass on a uni. job offer for a potential job with SMOE?

If anyone can offer some insight I'd really appreciate it. I'm a little unsure how to play my cards in this situation.

First, uni jobs differ from uni to uni and you are going to have to compare pay, vacation and hours along with the location of the uni job. SMOE has a set pay scale, set vacation days (21 base plus chances for more) and puts you where they need you in Seoul (meaning if you want to live near Hongdae, you could end up near Gimpo).

Second, I'm not sure when SMOE notifies applicants if they are accepted. I'm surprised they are doing interviews so early. You can ask that question in your interview, too.

Third, post (or PM me if you are shy) your qualifications and experience. I can give you pretty good idea if SMOE will hire you or not.

Fourth, do both interviews. If you like both positions, tell them you are interested. If the uni job offers a contract with a signing deadline later than SMOE, take it. It is SMOE's loss if they wait too long for a potential applicant.

Thanks for the reply, it's nice to have an outside opinion.

As for my qualifications, I don't have much in the way of certificates. I have been teaching for two years and have glowing recommendations from both hagwons I worked at. Aside from my lack of a TESOL or CELTA I don't see anything that could make me appear "unqualified."

I already had an interview with a recruiter working with SMOE and she's the one channeling the information between me and them...I doubt this means anything thing though.

With only a BA (non-education related) and no TEFL, you CAN get into SMOE, but they are picky and I wouldn't pass up a good uni job to wait and see if SMOE hires you. They prefer an education degree or a masters degree, but I know people straight out of uni with a non-education BA that work for SMOE.

You're highly unlikely to be rejected by SMOE, but, even though I do recommend SMOE, knowing what I know, I'd give the uni job a shot if I were in your position. Clearly, you should have your interview with the uni and if you get offered a job, take it, and if you don't get offered a job, pursue SMOE.
