Korean food manufactures are competing to whip up space-edible foods for Ko San, Korea's first astronaut who will lift off in a Russian Soyuz spacecraft in April.
The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute is working on kimchi with domestic food maker CJ and instant noodles with Nongshim. The Korean Food Research Institute is also developing space-safe fried kimchi, hot pepper paste and soy bean paste, rice, red ginseng and green tea with Daesang and Ottogi.
Russia will evaluate the safety and storability of the foods. If they pass the tests, traditional Korean food will be served to the astronauts on the spacecraft.
As the food makers race to create their space-friendly edibles, there are mixed opinions about the best way to sterilize it. Food makers working with the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute argue that freeze-dried foods don't taste good. But those working with the Korean Food Research Institute insist that consumers don't like irradiated foods.
However, there is a common view that developing space food will lead to enhancing the technological competitiveness of the Korean food industry. Currently researchers are developing space-edible hot pepper paste in tubes and soy bean paste in the form of instant soup. Preparing these foods is costly, so it remains to be seen whether the space-safe foods will be made available to consumers. |
All this is really interesting but I'm left with one question: If they can make kimchi work in space, why can't they get my school's cafeteria to stop serving wriggling octopus surprise in boiling pepper sauce? |

They were supposed to launch two-odd years ago. And by 'they' I mean two of them. Now it's one? How long will it be delayed this time?
On a side note, a long time ago somebody posted a picture taken from a museum here that had a display depicting the first lunar landing with a Korean flag planted in the moon's soil. Anybody remember where to find that pic? |

Y'know, I thought I'd seen it somewhere but the search function was useless. Also, this was on the Chosun Ilbo front page just today. |

I've read that chili sauce is very popular in space as weightlessness tends to cause a pooling of fluids in the nasal cavities, cutting off your sense of smell, hence your sense of taste (think eating with a head cold). So astronauts tend to squirt chili sauce on everything. I would imagine kimchi might be the perfect space food, as much as I'm loathe to admit it

Ha ha. Ah, Kimchi isn't exactly the super healthy super delicious cure-all food Koreans try to hype it as, but I do enjoy my daily dose in the school canteen and have to admit going to China Town regularly to buy it when I moved back to London for a year and half. It is addictive...
BUT - Next time my co-workers who have seen me eat it umpteen times ask me if I like it I'm going to bore them senseless with a long rambling nationalistic rant about how English people eat pickled cabbage (it's true) too with salads and I'll make all kinds of absurd and incredible health claims for it using psuedo scientific nonsense jargon and tell them how it is 'traditional' and 'delicious' over 67 times within ten minutes.
Let's see how they like that! |
