I know it's different now (or is it? buggered if I know - I'm just so glad I'm leaving and this crap doesn't affect me) but in 2005 the basic disclosure was fine.

What if you can't provide proof of your current adress??? Rolling Eyes

This is the new snag I've hit with applying for a crim. rec. check. They want proof of my current adress. How on earth do I do that? My current adress in korea is temporary so I'm using my friends adress as my postal adress.

Combined with the fact it took me about 2 hours to sort out a bank cheque for 10 pounds at the bank here,..this is such a *beeping* headache............

You would be better off contacting your local police station and requesting a PNC (Police National Computer) check. It will cost approximately 10.00 and will detail all information required for Visa applications.

I got the same response. just to add to the thread, here are the relevant websites:

CRB Check:

I have just been asked to provide a check.

The school have told me to contact the British Embassy.

A local check looks like it can take 40 days.
What should I do??

Not too sure if you can go through the Embassy here. You could always drop them a mail and find out: [email protected]

If you look at this link it'll tell you the info. You should also be able to find your local Police Authority http://www.askthe.police.uk/default.mth

and then google it and you'll get their homepage.

If you drop your force a email then they'll send you an attachment that you print off and fill out and a copy of your passport and the proof of address should be sent along with the forms, may be a bit of hassle that, if you're already here.

http://www.askthe.police.uk/content/Q542.htm

Send off for it. Then show your school ^ this link that says that it will take 40 days minimum plus extra possible for posting to Korea and hopefully that will suffice.

Pure speculation, i realise, but i have a Subject access thingy from my local police and from Scotland Yard (national) [not CRB] but it is dated December 2005. I'm in Korea now and i've been back in the UK for one brief period since then (a few weeks). Do you think there's any chance of immigration accepting it when the time comes to renew my visa?

I'm tempted just to submit it, try my luck, and claim ignorance.

I've not actually committed any crimes since then, but i don't think in this climate even an Englishman's word would be enough. Wink

Yep. But if the school is insistent that he contacts the embassy first, drop them mail and show it to the school. Especially when they mail back and tell them to go to the constabulary. You can only do something as quick as your own embassy/police force will allow. They'll just have to wait for their info.

Always funny to see K-time. When I got my visa, the recruiter and the Office of Education insisted it only took one day for the visa to be put into my passport when I sent it to the embassy. Talked with the embassy in London and they've never done one quicker than five days, that's their policy. Where they got the "one day" thing from I have no idea.

I guess we won't know until after the 15th....

In which case I presume it would be a matter of notarising degree certificate at embassy, then sending both pices of paper to the apostille people who can rush it to you by express mail within a week or so?

I am American but I think this logic applies to British in Korea as well. I have heard rumors that people have to go back to their home country to get the criminal background check done or that it will take too long, yadda yadda yadda.

Think about it logically from a Korean perspective. I'm sure you guys can relate to the fact that when a Korean wants you to work, he wanted you to start yesterday. So imagine how the Korean is going to react when he finds out he has to wait, more than a few days, for you to go back to your home country, get the criminal background check, and then come back to Korea. Do you think the Korean employer is going to stand for that?

If the rumors are true, there will be tons of Korean ESL employers making loud protests to the immigration office, if they aren't doing so already.

I think the more probable outcome of this will be, that you will have to get a criminal background check and the worst that will happen (other than "murderer" appearing on the report) is that you will have to take a whole day or part of a day off of work to go to a Korean immigration office, fill out some paperwork, pay a small fee (that your employer might even give you) and then they will process it.

But what's actually more likely than that is you will be able to do it over the web and have the British, the Canadian, the US, or whatever country you are from, government or police, do it and then snail mail the result to your employer.

Personally, I don't mind the hassle. I can take a day off of work to do the medical and criminal background check.

i have my subject access request in hand now, i spoke with the korean embassy in london and they said the foreign office can legalise the document for me, they also said that to get a copy of my degree notarized that they no longer do it and to go to the foreign office. now im reading that there is an apostille service in coventry and they want over 60 per document! the FCO want 27, a big difference. i will call the korean embassy again tommorrow i think.

keep us all up to date with it PJ as alot of us will be going through with it all in the next few months. Seems like few people have any hard facts yet about what actually needs doing so it will be awesome for you to tell us all exactly what you have had to to, what needs notorizing and where etc.
