|
|
I'm just about to start the process of applying for my first e-2 visa, which I should have issued to me in London before 15th Dec. However, I have smoked weed twice recently (although before that, not for a long time). I should arrive in Korea early January. Does anyone know the ins and outs of this drug testing (blood/hair etc?) and the penalty for failing it (just deportation/jail time/fines?). In all fairness I wasn't planning on smoking anything remotely illegal in Korea, but understandably, I'm now rather worried. Is it worth me canceling this contract and reapplying in 6 months when any nasties are out of my system?
Any info greatly appreciated! |

Why thankyou for your helpful comment mrsquirrel. I'm sure your life has been mistake free so far. And as I stated, should I be in Korea, I'd certainly have no intention of using any drugs. |

I would guess if you are tested with the recent drug usage it might show on a test, and it could hamper your employment. I am not a drug user, never have been, but at the same time someone like yourself who is honest enough to state the facts is certainly no worry for me in terms of you coming to Korea. I understand the whole distrust / mistrust thing other people might have, but if you face your battles head on and truly want to come here and stay clean while you are here, then I certainly hope it works out for you.
Too bad you didn't give it any thought before you indulged, but hopefully things will work out for you. Good luck! |

^ Problem is people like this OP start threads like this.
Dave's Druggy Cafe then gets dragged onto the Korean news and a new law is brought in that every ESL instructor in Korea has to piss in a cup every Monday morning. |

The answer is 30 days. If you know the difference between good drugs and bad drugs, then this applies to you.
I agree with the against the law principle too as along as that really is your principle. Where are the drug tests for J-walking, downloading, speeding and pedophilia? Those infractions are against the law as well, but I'm not seeing demands for testing in those areas. |

Sad part is... some of the drugs that are the most addictive and controversial are out of your system the quickest.
A line will leave your system within 48 hours and you will not test positive.
This is not true for hair tests though. They go back years. Hair tests are frequently prohibitively expensive. I'm sure it's just a urine test. |

Where else is he going to find this information out? That's what Dave's is set up for. People smoke weed back home, big deal. I used to have drug issues back home and made the decision to come to Korea and get out of that lifestyle. I have not used drugs here and I think I have matured past my college days.
Please don't be an a$$ to someone just because they have a past. It was a legitimate question at the correct place to ask for advice. |

I thought that was a reasonable question. I don't think having smoked weed at some stage makes you a druggy loser only to wind up in the gutter with a needle sticking out of your arm. At least someone had an imformative answer which is unusual in these forums, they seem just for the bitter and twisted wanting to vent their anger in not being able to adjust to a foreign culture. |

Only poppyseed bagels you mean?
Mr. Squirrel: Get of your HIGH-horse. Pot is safer than alcohol.
OP: You can get system-cleansing vitamins that get rid of things quicker. Do an Internet search about it and avoid people who don't know what they are talking about or want to flame you. Korea will reject teachers who fail drug-tests, but won't put you in jail unless you've broken Korean law and have done drugs in the country. Then they can jail you long periods of time, like 5 months, if you fail a drug test after being in Korea for a few weeks or longer since they know didn't leave the country and obviously did drugs in Korea. |

Cannabis 'more harmful than tobacco'
Cannabis plant
Cannabis linked to emphysema
Smoking three cannabis cigarettes a day is as dangerous as having a whole packet of standard cigarettes, say researchers.
Regular smokers of cannabis are at increased risk of developing the potentially fatal lung disease emphysema, claim doctors based in Bristol.
There is a public perception that marijuana smoking has little adverse effect on physical health.
Dr Martin Johnson
They investigated the smoking habits of four cannabis, or marijuana, users who had advanced emphysema.
Three of the men smoked far less than would usually be associated with the disease, which destroys the surface of the lungs, in standard tobacco smokers.
They said their results questioned the common perception that cannabis was less dangerous than tobacco.
Deeper inhalation
The increased risk could be due to extra volume taken in a draw of a cannabis cigarettes, deeper inhalation of the smoke and extra time the breath is held in for.
The contents of the smoke, other than the mind-altering compound delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol in cannabis and nicotine in tobacco, are very similar.
But hand-made marijuana cigarettes, made with rolling tobacco, deliver four times more nicotine because of the lack of a filter.
The researchers conducted in-depth case studies of four men aged 27, 35, 44 and 46. One smoked just two cigarettes a day, the second half an ounce of tobacco and the third only smoked cigars.
But the researchers found they were all heavy users of marijuana. The 27-year-old had smoked several pipes a day for some years, the two aged 44 and 46 had two to three marijuana cigarettes a day and the 35-year-old had smoked two a week for 20 years.
Dr Martin Johnson said in the journal Thorax: "Smoking three to four marijuana cigarettes per day produces a comparable histological effect on the airways to smoking 20 tobacco cigarettes daily.
"There is a public perception that marijuana smoking has little adverse effect on physical health, and, given the growing political lobby to legalise marijuana and associated substances in the UK, we hope that our case reports will stimulate further study into their potential lung toxicity."

Obviously the Lung Foundation don't know what they are talking about. |
