They have 'em at most convenience stores...try saying "Yon-gook phone-card-uh" and playing charades, should get you what you want Wink

GS25 stores usually have them (most convenient stores have them).

Ask for a 세계전화카드 (say-gyay joan-hwah cawd) [international calling card]

(Get Skype for your computer to make phone calls)

If like me, you're a computer muppet and can't / don't want to do skype etc...

The cheapest, best value phone card for UK can be bought at phone shops in Itaewon. It is called 'Islam Star' (oh the irony)

It costs 14,000 and I get over 240 minutes (around 280 I think) to UK land lines. Have been using it for 2 yrs.

You can call from your mobile at same rates using the card.

Anyone know of a better phonecard deal, please post here or pm me.

Is the shop called "Islam Star" or the card?

Yup. And cross the street from gekko's (exit 4 Itaewon subway station.) To your right you'll see the beginning of a very famous side street and hill. Around there there are several stores that will sell you the card.

Also available at the foriegn food supermarket near whatthebook.

I use the 'Focus' phone card. It costs me 12,000....but that's in Ansan which is not much good if you're in Bucheon. Get 7hrs calling time, Korean landline to UK landline.

Why this dislike of Skype?

Rates:
Skype user - Skype user = free unlimited
Skype user - USA = 22 won/minute ~ $10 ~ 6 hours 40 minutes
Skype user - UK = 22 won/minute ~ 10 Pounds ~ 13 hours 50 minutes

If at all possible, try Skype for yourself and you'll see how much better it is than other options.

What is the skype sound quality like? Is it comparable to normal phone lines?

its VOIP, so the sound quality isn't amazing, however, i've found it to be on par or better than most any calling card i use...the calling cards i've found always connect through a VOIP service anyways...and about half the cards you buy will have a delay in your conversation...skype has no delay...you can't beat the prices and its convenient...just sit back at home with a headset on and enjoy yourself Smile

I agree mostly but I have found that Skype call quality isn't better than calling card quality, just the same; where calling cards seem to have a minuscule delay, Skype, unfortunately does too. But, considering the price, and the distance the connection travels, no complaints from me.

"For You" is pretty good. 13,000 for just over 4 hours to a landline. Less for mobiles or 0845-style numbers. The line is always crystal clear though, and there's no delay. Can't always say this about some of the cheaper ones I've purchased.

I've had a look at the Skype website and it says that it charges the same price for calls to both LAN lines and mobiles. If this is true it means I can call friends back home (UK), from Korea on their mobiles for 1.4 pence per minute! Is this true lol??
