I was planning on bringing Canadian Traveler cheques and changing them to won when I arrive in Korea. Is this a good idea? Would I be better off just getting some won here (Vancouver) and avoid the whole traveler cheque thing?

Please offer me your opinions. Thanks!

Using cheques is considered to be safer and I think that the exchange rate is better than with hard currency. I usually change few hundred euros to won at the airport right after I pass the customs. I also have an international credit card that can be used in _some_ Korean ATMs. Um, I'm really not that helpful to you. Sorry!

EDIT: You'll like Ilsan. It's a nice place to live.

Just do what most people do - change your money into won at your bank (they should give you the best deals anyway) before you come here or just do it at the airport.

Korea is safe and no one is ging to rob you, chill. And you're not going to make ntoicable savings unless you're talking thousands of dollars..

Welcome to Ilsan, it's a cool place.

Be sure to check out Texas Hold Em night at Torros bar on thursdays... Wink

Do NOT change your money into won in your home country. Bring cash, exchange a little at the airport and then the rest at the bank (and open an account at the same time, avoid KB bank).

i brought american traveller's cheques (i'm canadian too) and some won. i opened my bank account within three days, and put the cheques in there so i'd have money through 'til pay day.

the won i just used for misc. things within my first day or so in korea.
it's tough getting to the airport after a long flight and then worrying about finding a place to exchange money so you can afford some dinner..

just advice, worked out well for me

enjoy ilsan! i've heard it's nice but never been there
