Hi,

My boyfriend and I are media graduates and are hoping to come out to Korea at the end of February to teach English - destination undecided as yet. My background is in journalism and I'd hope to keep writing when I'm out there, I'd love to get some freelance work for a British paper or volunteer for a publication in Korea, but most likely will just keep a blog.

My boyfriend, however, is more into film production and script writing and is paranoid that he is sacrificing a brilliant film career in the UK to go out to Korea to teach (currently unemployed at the moment). Is there anyone who could suggest any film/video making companies he could approach for work on a volunteer basis in his spare time, or suggestions of cities he might be able to find this sort of work - or is there any likelihood any Korean film companies may be looking for ESL teachers for their actors/crew ?!

It's a scary world. I get calls once or twice a month to do acting jobs. I have done some small "man in the background" stuff for soaps, but am far too big and scary to be in a main role. It was many years ago. I avoid it now, because I usually ended up blowing an entire afternoon for not a lot of money.

In short -- don't do this if you are on an E-2 visa. Far too many foreigners have been busted in recent years. You can get an acting visa for reocurring shows, but I don't think it's possible with an actual show/TV station sponsoring. I could be wrong on that.

The recruiters for these PT acting jobs are, in my limited experience, absolute liars, and they have no qualms about it. They will tell you something is perfectly legal, full-well knowing it's not. They'll tell you immigration knows about it, and it's OK -- it's a lie. At the end of the day, they just want a foreign face to fill the role.

Get busted doing it, and you may as well have been teaching privates on TV for everyone to see. Would you allow a TV show to tape you teaching a private lesson, and then air it? They may as well, because when you put your mug on TV without the proper visa, that's about the same way immigration views it.

Unless you have paperwork/approval from immigration to do the work, DO NOT do it on an E-2.

better off he stay in home. this place is a black hole for creativity. i am a film major myself in cinematography. jobs here are hard to come by.. and even if there are... you'd be treated like dirt's dirt with little or no pay.

also.. it sounds like your b/f just got outta film school. if you go away to asia for a year or two.. the few contacts you have made in school and out there in the industry will be gone by the time you get back. just something to think about.

NO.. best thing he can do is, make his own docos here, use his pc for editing etc.. perhaps he could get it sold back in the UK if its done right.
I am also a film major and thought about it.. but its just ,making the time
but working with local korean production firms, you dont speak Korean no chance!
plenty of creative outlets here, just need to have some passion, but best advise for production work! is make your own! plenty of ideas for docos here.

I've been trying to tell him that - that there'll hopefully be loads of ideas for documentaries in Korea and we'll be taking a laptop so might be able to use that for editing etc. If we were living in London and he was in a great job at the moment then I could take his point but there isn't that much film work available where we live and I reckon he might get more inspiration in Korea.
