Looking for places to have a concert in Seoul. It doesn't have to be a paying gig or anything - we just want to play. Anyone know of a good place?

Hae Bang Cheon usually has spots for bands. I think there's a battle of the bands on this weekend.

Is that in Hongdae? or Itaewon or something?

what racetraitor is saying is the music scene is a lame clique-fest.
if you don't play the exact conforming style of a particular club then you aren't welcome.

So, what style do you play and is it original or covers? Then maybe people can help you.
Crappy top 40 foreigner cover bands are a dime a dozen.

I used to play the *beep* out of Mike's Cabin in Sinchon last year. That is, until we had a disagreement with Mike about some beers we didn't feel obligated to pay for once.

Anyway, you might try going and trying that. If not there, there are many open jamz (that's right jamz) in and around the greater Itaewon area. It's a great way to get started and get other gigs. Just ask one of those dudes who hangs around Itaewon a lot when and where the open jamz are. Good luck.

That's pretty much it. I can help bands get gigs as long as they're not the aforementioned "crappy top 40 foreigner cover bands." But if you were to say "funk" I might suggest a different club than if you were to say "straight-edge hardcore."

We haven't been out gigging in Seoul for almost a year but the usual places that accept most forms of guitar music are:

Itaewon

Big Electric Cat (heard it changed owner, not sure what it's like now but it was pretty cool)
Ole Stompers Rock Spot (a bit seedy and rough and ready at the top of Hooker Hill)
Rocky Mountain Tavern (very cliquey and the owners are class A Tw*ts)

HongDae

Spot Club (seems to be geared to punk/nu-metal/the heavier side of indie)
Slugg.er (don't know if this place is still around but they were kinda like 80s hair metal)
Soundholic (really nice looking venue good stage setup)

I don't live in Seoul - these are just some of the places we've played. We play a mix of covers and originals and try and sell some of our CDs at gigs. We found the Koreans to be quite interested in a 'foreigner' band.

What about a band that is Mogwai/Sigur Rosesque?

I'm pretty sure Itaewon wouldn't dig it but somewhere in Hongdae must appreciate this kind of music.

There are a number of places that sort of band could play in Hongdae. Spot and DGBD would be the first places to try.
