It's always nice when someone helps you out. This happened to me a few times lately. A recruiter guy who made no money from me loaned me some money a week ago. Someone apparently ripped off my shoes at the "goshiwon" a few days ago, and the guy at the desk gave me a pair to wear. And the guy at the PC room just helped me use the scanner. Just when I was getting good and bitter about this country and its people! Wink

Korea is the 'Land of the Extremes'

It has some of the best people that I've ever met and some of the worst.

I guess that's why this board is so popular and so divisive.

Koreans are always extremely helpful and genereous and do anything to help you out. I've always encountered that as well. Its overwhelming sometimes..

Just got out of work and it was raining.. some girl actually gave me her umbrella.. I tried to explain that I was completely fine and it wasn't necessary. She insisted and I took it for about 2 minutes almost out of politeness or something.. but ended up giving it back although she strongly resisted wanting it back.

(By the way for anyone jumping to conclusions.. she was with her boyfriend)..

But that kind of thing often happens on rainy days.. (particularly since I'm seldom prepared with umbrellas)..

That's right about the umbrella thing . I actually had a guy run out of his auto shop once to give me an umbrella - to keep. That floored me. And little things like that seem to happen fairly often.

One place that always surprises me is Seoul. I'm somewhat of a hick myself and I generally assume that big city people will be cold and indifferent to strangers. But in Seoul you can't stand on a corner looking confused for more than maybe 2 minutes without someone coming over to help.

I've gotten into a couple of fixes over the years here, but have always been fortunate in having a Korean take the time and trouble to help bail me out of them. At the college I teach at now, my teaching assistant has to be one of the most helpful people I have ever met - I would be completely lost in the bureaucracy were it not for her.

Of course there are a lot of pricks who go out of their way to be annoying, but the "helpful" to "intentionally obstructive" ratio here seems pretty positive overall.

What is it with the umbrellas..are they afraid we will get rained on by the rain???
I remember walking with my g/f one day and I would say it was spitting, no way I needed an umbrealla. Anyway, she insists I get under and when I didn't she was a little angry. maybe they are scared of their on rain.

In regards to the OP, i have been helped out so many times. the most recent example was 2 weeks ago when i really needed to make a phone call, the clerk at LG 25 just handed me his cell phone and said no problem. That was cool, and then he gave me an umbrella(no joke Very Happy )

Yeah, I've noticed very few Koreans ever caught in the rain without an umbrella. Back in the 'wild' west.. seems like we're all caught with umbrellas all the time.. I know I am.. as well as I am here. For Koreans, its just inconceivable.. they kind of take pity on you..

I agree that there are some really good people out there.

The security dudes in my building are great old guys. One of them only speaks a few words of english but he always says good afternoon, good night to me. I have a quick conversation in my survial korean.

Likewise the bar guys in my building are great. They point me to the right table if I'm looking for my friends. Give a few on the house.

All the service around the place is great.

The korean teachers that will do a quick afterhours translation to the maintence guys when a fuse blows in my apartment and I can't find the fusebox.

The people that have given me an umbrella/helped me fill an deposit slip etc.

I could go on but I won't.
