I'm looking for something in English stating that Dec. 19th is a national holiday for the Presidential elections.

Any help?

My wife can find "non-official" (ie. news sites) that say it is and we should have it off, but nothing on any of the ministries' websites.

Thanks.

As far as the public schools are concerned, it is a holiday from what I am being told from two schools. The public schools are used as polling precincts so they will need to have use of the facilities for the entire day. This is why the public schools have the day off. Again, this is what I am being told by two schools I work for.

Well I'm going with it being a National Holiday,
All the koreans I've spoken to have mentioned this fact, and our Hagwon is even closing for the day...which would be unheard of otherwise.

Why should your students lose a day of learning just because there is an election. Sure the public schools have to close if they serve as polling places, but are you so lazy that you need an extra day off in the middle of the week?

I think the kids' educations are more important than politics.

It's not about being lazy, it's about needing a freaking break. I only got three vacation days and have to rely on holidays to get any extra time off, so don't YOU give me any shit about being lazy.

If losing valuable knowledge by missing a day is so vital, how come they get any days off at all? Why not go to school 365 days a year for 14 hours a day?

This is good that we are getting a free day as we have not had a day off in so long. Holidays have been ridiculous few in this year of my life. Never does the boss say, class is canceled this afternoon, go do what you like to do today.

I had one class canceled a month ago and the boss didn't tell me about it. When I went to her office, she acted like she didn't know a thing when I asked where my students were. Is she that out of sync to not know a class was canceled due to their public school having a field trip that day? I think she didn't want me to know and wanted have me confused. Bittch.

I agree with ontheway. As a public school teacher that gets more 26 business days of vacation and all public holidays, I certainly am lazy and happy to spend the day drinking with friends.

Well I'm a public school teacher and I don't get that much vacation. So give me a break!

The last holiday was about 2 months ago for Chuseok, and most people got Wed, Th, Fri off. There was another holiday the week after Chuseok. You've got the elections holiday coming up, Christmas, New Years, and then another wed, th, fri holiday for Lunar new year coming up. I'm not complaining at all. Oh, and sorry to rub it in, but i only teach for 9 hours next week, 0 the following week because of final exams, and will probably just relax with a movie or song the last couple weeks until school is out for vacation.
I think you'll be happy to make the switch to a public school

I do extra work to get some those days, it's not my base vacation amount.

It still puts Korea well below the level of western countries, as far as giving vacations. And Korea still has much lower levels of productivity.

Go figure.
