I'll try and be a bit more helpful than Gord and tell you that Mrs is an abbreviation of mistress.

Mrs. is easy. Generalizing, you can say it is the title a married woman uses.

Now, how about Ms.??? I want to hear a good explanation of THAT one!!!

Katyid, I tell my students that when a woman says Ms. she does not want you to know whether she is married or single.
When a student asks why, which seems to be common with Korean adults, I tell them that it was done be equal to Mr.

Holy cow, I made a spelling mistake. You got me. Does this mean I get to start going through your messages now too?

Because I pointed out you had written that you were asking what the short form of "Mrs." was, and why we thought that?

To reach the conclusion that you were looking for where "r" in "Mrs." comes from requires us to skip the English part of your question and do an algebraic equation with the key words to try and guess what you were attempting to say.

It was a classic example of "tell me what I want to know, not what I ask for".

Cap'n, I think the point is that when your sarcasm toward someone is based on that person's perceived lack of English ability, making up your own faux English words doesn't exactly help your case. Isn't that "obvious"?

I DUNT SPOKE THU ENGLISH THU GOODEST. That, and I don't get all pissy and start tossing out insults when people point out my mistakes.

Seriously though, in this case my French is at fault as "masquerade" comes from the French word "mascarade". I was unaware that the English version had the spelling changed but the pronunciation was the same.
