I have no idea what SES is but ETS is the organization that runs the SAT and other standardized tests such as the GRE. Stands for Educational Testing Service.
Its website
In regards to african-american test scores, I have read about the discrepancy before. Steve isn't pulling it out of his ass. I'll look for info when I have a bit more time on my hands. |

Now there's a backsided--er--backhanded compliment if ever there was one. But I'll take it.

FEel free to make fun of my ignorance but I'll be honest, in the hopes of getting an actual response because I'm quite intrigued by this idea:

| 1) I know what the SAT scores are but what is SES? |
socio-economic status, a common sociological term
the Educational Testing Service, conveniently headquartered in Princeton, New Jersey, but having no affiliation to the university there

| ) 3) Why are marks catagorized "by SES"? What is the importance of SES and what are the implications of using SES? |
Publicly reported scores on the SAT do not include SES and race/ethnicity breakdowns; one has to write for a special report from ETS or visit a large university library that has copies. One of the tired refrains of the affirmative action crowd is that Black students have less social capital because they come from poorer families. These reports make clear year after year that this is simply not true; i.e., they are not a decisive or even usually significant factor in the test score gap (see amazon.com for a flurry of books on this very subject over the past decade).

| 4) Where did you get this info? |
(see above) It's also common knowledge to those of us who taught in the trenches. I saw it repeatedly over a period of a decade and colleagues in similar schools acknowledged the same.

| 5) What is the point of using SES to catagorize SAT results? |
Again, see above
I'll tell you, I've been subbing back here in Canada now since september and the average black kid performs EXACTLY like the average white kid. |
You're in Canada and this is one classroom, so it's hardly generalizable. Are these children of immigrants? Black Caribbean and African Black students usually score higher on the SAT and the GRE than Black Americans. This suggests a link to social conditioning more than race. |
