Certainly nothing I can see enlightening about that. My wife has permanent residency for New Zealand, even though she doesn't live there, simply because I am her husband and submitted the paperwork. No risk to me nor her. Oh, she can vote there, she can divorce then collect welfare payments there, she could leave and live in Korea and return ten years later and still have the same status and even collect retirement pension. Korean people don't even need to be married to a Kiwi in order to receive permanent residency, in fact some 1% of the population in NZ are full-Korean permanent residents. Many people stay for their children's education then return back to Korea never to set foot in NZ again.
Can Korea offer the same assurances for its immigrants? Can it offer much at all? No. It does however offer to change the status of one's 'sojourn' from short-term guest to long-time guest.

often find myself lambasting Korea for reasons I perceive to be wrong about the culture, environment, ethics, and especially, the perception of me. How does the perception Koreans have of me compare to the one that the general population of my own country holds towards aliens who speak little of the native language? Is there a hierarchy imposed on those aliens by themselves or my government?
To all ABCDEF - 12345 visa holders, I can only suggest to fill a large bowl with water and place it in the middle of an empty room. Then look into the water and stare deep down into that reflection. If you can't find anything, try turning off the lights and lighting some candles around the bowl and/or add some ink to the water. How does that perception of yourself differ from the one others have of you?
When Korean immigration looks at the face in the water, one major difference it sees between an E and an F is that of someone who is either an employee or a family member. How highly does Korea value family? How about you?

*snore*
you're Korean, right?
You obviously aren't married, been in Korea for less than 8 months, and are fresh off a degree.

F visa holders: give your spouse/parents/relatives a nice hug and thank them for the risks they are taking on your account.

What risks might they be? |

Part of the problem is the defensive nature of the premise of the thread pretty much opened it up for a flamefest to take place(which happened, but then was cleaned up by the mods including the title). Adding fuel to the fire at this point is not wise, especially given the attitude of some of the people on this board and the fact they are pissed off about the new E-2 regulations.
There is a backlash right now by some teachers because they clearly want to blame the wrong people for the new regulations. There's no point in making the situation worse. |
